CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Campbell men's and women's track & field teams began the 2016 season at the Joe Hilton Invite, Saturday, Jan. 9, hosted by the University of North Carolina.
"Looking back at the results we really had some good season opening marks in quite a few events," head coach Michael Kelly said. "Our short sprinters and hurdlers performed really well today. I was disappointed in the 4x4's at the end of the meet and I think that took away from some of the good that happened earlier in the day."
The men's team captured two first place finishes while the women's side claimed three of the top spots throughout the day's events.
"On the men's side Khai performed really well in the 60m and chase and Davian had solid opening performances in the high jump," Kelly stated.
On the men's side, Khai McLin claimed first place in the 60-meter dash, running a time of 6.88 seconds improving on his prelim time by .06 seconds. McLin also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 22.59 seconds.
Also in the 200-meter dash, Cornelius Scott finished in third place for Campbell with a time of 22.75 seconds. Chigozie Atavwigho placed in a tie for fifth place in the race.
Davian Rhodes earned first placed in the men's high jump with his jump at 2.01 meters. Chase Edwards finished third in the same event for the Camels.
"I thought Roshae and Ali raced very well on the distance side as well," Kelly said. "The female jumpers were also off to a really good start with Sabina and Shenelle reaching new PB's [personal best] in the long jump. "
For the women, three individuals claimed first place honors in their respective events. Roshae Jackson earned first place with her 2:21.53 finish in the women's 800-meter run. Ali Bowen finished in first place in the women's 3,000 meter run with an 11:19.88 mark.
In the long jump Sabina Allen claimed the top spot with a 5.62 meter mark and Shenelle McKay finished second at 5.46 meters. Jaszlyn Jenkins also participated in the long jump event for the Orange and Black.
The Campbell women's 4x400 meter relay team finished in third place in the event finals with a 4:00.34 mark.
Lilla Juhasz finished third in the 60 meter hurdles with an 8.58 time. Tatiana Wolfe finished fourth in the same event for Campbell.
Kaelyn Yoder finished second in the 1 mile run with a 5:51.82 time. Megan Lanzon also competed in the 1 mile event for the Camels.
Campbell returns to the track next weekend, Jan. 15 & 16 at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.
