Box Score RADFORD, VA. – Campbell senior captain Payton Ormsby stepped up in a big way for the Fighting Camels (9-6-0, 4-2-0 BSC), notching the game-winning golden goal in the first minute of overtime against the Radford Highlanders (6-6-0, 4-2-0) to lift the Camels to a 3-2 victory.
The game-winner came on a double assist from freshman Alexa Genas and redshirt junior Nicole Connolly, and Ormsby was able to send the ball in from six yards out. It was her team-leading sixth goal on the season and her third game-winning goal of the 2016 campaign.
"Payton has done a really good job of stepping up big for us in some really key moments," said head coach Stuart Horne. "This week, it was the overtime goal. Last week, she assisted on all three goals. At Asheville, she scored the game-tying and game-winning goals. She has really thrived under pressure, and she's really embraced every moment of her senior year. When it comes time for a clutch play or a clutch goal, she seems to be the one that's on the stat sheet with it. We couldn't be more proud of how Payton has performed in these moments."
Campbell got off to a fast start in the match, scoring a pair of goals in the first eight minutes of action. Senior defender Allie Hopkins connected on the first goal of the match as Genas took a shot from the corner of the box that bounced off the cross car. Hopkins was there to head the ball in to give CU an early 1-0 advantage.
Genas recorded the second goal for Campbell on a penalty kick after taking a hard foul in the box. The score was good for her fifth goal of the season, and she ended the match with a game-high four points on the night.
"Alexa is such a good kid," Horne said of his freshman forward. "She works so hard in practice, and she's very coachable. Every time she is given any bit of information from the coaching staff, she just soaks it all in. She's just really open to listening and doing what she needs to do."
Trailing 2-0 at the break, the Highlanders would not go down without a fight. Radford got a spark as the Camels committed a foul in the box to set up a penalty shot for the Highlanders. Jordan Lundin stepped up and put the penalty kick just inside the right post, making the score 2-1.
CU held Radford scoreless for the majority of the run of play, but the Highlanders notched the equalizer in the final minute of play. Abby Gardner scored the goal for RU with 17 seconds left on the game clock to send the match to overtime.
With the win, the Camels move up to 4-2-0 in conference play and are currently tied with Radford at the top of the Big South standings. The Camels are now on a two-match conference win streak after most recently topping Winthrop, 3-2, in double overtime.
"It's great to get any conference win. I know it's a cliché, but in this conference, you get three points whenever you can get three points. When you get those points in this way against a very good Radford team, it's very special for our group. Three points regardless of where you get them are great, but it feels good getting them on the road against a good team."
Up next, the Fighting Camels will return home as they host the conference-favorite Liberty Eagles. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Eakes Athletic Complex. For the most up-to-date information on Campbell women's soccer, follow @GoCamelsWSOC on Twitter.
