Terer notches third-place finish at Pre-Nationals

TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Campbell senior Amon Terer led the Camels at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet Saturday morning, finishing third overall in the men's 8K. Terer completed the course in 23:58.5 and notched his third-straight third-place finish this season. With 650 points, the Campbell men finished the meet 24th overall out of 40 teams.

"That's definitely Amon's best cross country race I've seen him run," said head coach Michael Kelly. "If he can duplicate that performance a couple more times this season, he will have a great shot at finishing his senior year as an All-American in November."

Terer and sophomore Lawrence Kipkoech were among the leaders of the pack for the majority of the race, with the duo crossing all three splits in the top 10. Kipkoech ended up finishing in 17th place at the meet, posting a mark of 24:22.3 in the 8K for CU. Both he and Terer finished ahead of FloTrack.com's No. 10 ranked individual runner, Colorado's John Dressel.

Other runners for the Camels included Jacob Kipserem, Meshack Kipruto and Hunter Gilbert. Kipserem and Kipruto finished the race 15 seconds apart, crossing the line in 25:54.8 and 26:09.7, respectively. In just his second career 8K, Gilbert completed the race with a mark of 26:52.5.

Up next for Campbell cross country, the men's and women's teams will head back to Asheville, N.C. for the Big South Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 28.

"Not sure what happened to Lawrence in the final 1K, but I'm sure he will be back right where he belongs next time," Kelly said. "From a team perspective, it was a very humbling day. We have a very long way to go if we want to compete at a national level. Looking ahead, we are going to make sure we have two weeks of great training and focus on defending our Big South title at the end of the month."
