POWELLS POINT, N.C. – All five Campbell golfers birdied the 18th hole to lift the Camels to a one-stroke win over host Old Dominion in the OBX Collegiate men's golf tournament Tuesday at Kilmarlic Golf Club.
Thomas La Morte shot a collegiate career low 6-under-par 65 and Ray Kravixien holed an 18-foot putt on the final green as Campbell earned its second-straight team victory at Kilmarlic. La Morte tied for fourth individually, Craig Hornberger tied for fourth and Kravixien was 14th in the final team standings.
Campbell (288-282-275—845) entered the day 12 strokes behind 36 hole leader Ball State, but posted a 9-under-par 275 on the par-71, 6550-yard Kilmarlic layout. Old Dominion (282-283-281—846) was second and Akron (279-282-287—848) finished third in the 18-school event.
The Camels, who stood seventh after Sunday's opening-round 288, finished the 54-hole event with a tournament-leading 61 birdies, 26 on Tuesday.
La Morte eclipsed his previous career low (66) he recorded last month at the Golfweek Program Challenge by making eight birdies Tuesday and leading the 93-golfer field with 16 for the tournament. After finishing Tuesday's round one stroke off the school 18-hole record, the junior from Demarest, N.J., tied for first in par-five scoring (-7) and tied for 10th by playing the par-3 holes even to earn his second-straight top-five individual finish. He tied for fourth overall at 5-under-par 208 (75-68-65), four strokes behind medalist David Langley of ODU (70-67-67—204).
Hornberger, the 2015 ODU/OBX individual champ, tied for eighth overall at 1-under 212 (69-74-69). He tied for second in the field with 40 pars and was fifth in par-four scoring (-1).
Kraivixien (71-71-71) finished at even-par 213 and was fourth from the par five holes (-6) while tying for ninth with 12 birdies. The 2014 ODUC/OBX individual champion, Gaston Bertinotti tied for 22nd (74-72-70—216) after making 14 birdies over three days (tied for fourth). Sophomore Jesper Svensson tied for 39th (74-71-77—222).
"Our men weren't even in the final group today, but got off to a good start and were in the thick of it after about six holes," said head coach John Crooks. "It all culminated with all five of our golfers making birdie on the 18th hole. They struggled the first day, but (assistant coach) Weston (Eklund) handled it the right way and they caught lightning in a bottle today."
Campbell concludes its fall schedule Oct. 30-Nov. 1 with the Kiawah Classic.
