BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell freshman forward Alexa Genas netted two goals to lift the No. 3 seed Fighting Camels past the No. 6 seed Radford Highlanders, 2-0, in a Big South Quarterfinal matchup Saturday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex. It was the third two-goal output of Genas' young collegiate career.
"The thing we like about Alexa is that she just works hard," said head coach Stuart Horne. "She's so coachable. She's always trying to get better, and if you look at her from the start of the season to now, she's finding herself each game and getting better."
The first goal of the match came in the 34th minute of action as Genas knocked a ball in off a deflected shot from junior midfielder Shelby Denkert, who was credited with the assist. Denkert found the freshman again in the second half, sending a perfectly-placed pass right at the feet of Genas, who sent the ball inside the right post. Denkert's two assists were a career-high, and Coach Horne likes what he saw from his defensive midfielder.
"Shelby just works so hard and does so much that you don't notice," Horne said. "You don't make a lineup card without her name on it. She's just so steady and so consistent. With her, you know you are getting nothing but maximum effort while she's out there, and it was great to see her assist on both of the goals tonight."
Led by freshman goalkeeper Natalya Marcove, the Camel defense held the Highlanders scoreless for their third-straight shutout. Marcove notched three saves on the night and made some clutch plays for the Camels off of Radford corner kicks.
Campbell was aggressive on the attack all night long, outshooting the Highlanders, 21-7. Senior midfielder Christine Kindt took 10 corner kicks on the night while Radford junior Jordan Lundin took seven. Radford goalkeeper Courtenay Kaplan tallied five saves on the night, but her two goals allowed were the deciding factor in the match.
Prior to the match, the Big South conference honored both teams' all-conference award winners. Genas, Ormsby and Murita Storey were selected First-Team All-Conference, while Kindt was named to the Second-Team. Kine Thorsvik was selected as an All-Conference Honorable Mention and All-Academic Team. Callie Beckwith and Genas were each named to the All-Freshman Team.
Up next, the Camels will head to Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C. for the Big South Semifinals. CU will face off with either UNC Asheville or Liberty, with that match taking place on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. Tonight's win marks the third-straight season that Campbell has reached a Big South Semifinal matchup. Last year's squad made it to the final before falling to Liberty, 1-0. It was the first conference championship appearance for Campbell since 2011.
"Going back to Greensboro is both an opportunity, and it's unfinished business for us. It's unfinished business because we've been there the past two years in the semifinal, and the final last year. Last year's final was such a tight game, and we had some good chances and opportunities to win the game, but it just didn't work out.
"However, it's also an opportunity because we do have a different cast of characters from last year. During this time of year, every chacne you get to keep playing with your team and to also be in the hunt for a championship trophy is special. The opportunity for our returners to get back to Greensboro and for the freshmen to get a chance to play in this is great."
