MACON, Ga. --- Mercer outscored Campbell 21-9 in the fourth period and turned just a three-point third period advantage into a 76-60 victory on Wednesday night. Caroline Bowns led the Camels (1-1) with 13 points off the bench while Bria Emanuel pulled down a team-high six rebounds to go with nine points.
The Bears (2-1) tallied the first six points of the final period to take a 12-point advantage (61-49) with 8:23 left to play. It was their largest lead since the final minute of the first half. A Breanna Foster three cut the lead to nine, but another 6-0 spurt made the advantage 69-54 with 4:30 showing on the clock.
Taya Bolden broke the Camels' four-minute scoring drought with a layup, however the lead grew to 19 after two Alex Williams free throws with two minutes left to play. Emanuel scored the Camels final four points of the contest in the last two minutes before the Bears claimed the non-conference victory.
Summer Price led the Campbell starters with nine points on three three's while Hannah Long had eight points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field. Price dished out a team-high four assists as well. MaKala Rouse and Brianna Cribb each pulled down five rebounds apiece while Foster added eight points with a pair of triples.
Kahila Lawrence scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Bears while KeKe Calloway tallied 22 off the bench. Lawrence was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards.
Mercer tallied the first six points of the contest before Tiffany Daniel put CU on the board five minutes in. Bowns nailed a three to pull the Camels within four of the lead with 3:43 left in the opening frame, but an 8-2 run by the Bears to end the period gave them an 18-8 lead after the first.
The Bear lead grew to 32-16 on a Calloway three midway through the second period. Long answered with back-to-back layups, and a pair of Foster free throws drew the Camels within 11 of the lead (36-25) with 1:24 to play before halftime. Emanuel hit a layup and a free throw in the final minute of the half while the Camels held the Bears off the scoreboard to go into the locker room just down 36-28.
Long cut the Mercer lead to 41-37 on a layup with 5:22 on the clock in the third period. Mercer responded with the next six points to take the only double-digit advantage of the frame (47-37) with 3:14 left before the fourth. Three's from Foster and Bowns highlighted a 7-1 Camel run to pull the lead back to four.
After a Calloway free throw, Bowns nailed another triple and the Camels were within three, the closest they had been to the lead all game. Calloway quickly answered with a three on the other end before Sydni Means followed it up with a layup. Cribb hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the frame to send CU to the fourth down just 55-49.
Campbell shot 44.9 percent from the field (22-for-49), which included a 9-for-19 clip from behind the arc (47.7 percent). Mercer held an 18-8 advantage in turnovers and fell just short of the Camels' shooting mark at 41.9 percent (26-for-62). MU also held a narrow 36-34 advantage on the boards.
Campbell will return to action at home for the first of back-to-back contests inside Gore Arena on Saturday against VCU. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
