Strong third period sends Camels past N.C. Central

BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- Campbell outscored North Carolina Central 22-7 and shot 64 percent from the field in the third period en route to a 61-30 victory over the Eagles on Tuesday night. Summer Price and Bria Emanuel led CU (2-2) with a game-high 13 points apiece.

Tiffany Daniel scored nine points and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds. Taya Bolden matched Daniel's seven boards and added six points, a block and a steal. Hayley Barber tallied a season-high six points to go with four assists. Emanuel connected on 6-of-9 field goals while Price was 5-of-8 from the field.

After a solid 29-12 advantage at the half, a Price layup ignited a 12-0 run to push the Camel lead to a commanding 43-16 margin with 4:53 left in the third. Bolden hit her first career three pointer in the stretch to give CU its first 20-point advantage of the night.

Jada Blow broke a nearly four minute N.C. Central (1-3) scoring drought with a pair of free throws, but Campbell ended the third with a 7-1 spurt to take a 51-19 lead to the fourth period. CU connected on 9-of-14 field goal attempts and hit three three's in the third

Campbell's largest lead of the night came off a pair of Brianna Cribb free throws to push the advantage to 57-23 with 5:34 left to play. The Eagles outscored the Camels 7-6 in the final five minutes of action despite suffering the 31-point loss.

Blow paced NCCU with seven points and a pair of assists. Paulina Afriyie led the Eagles on the boards with six rebounds while Kierona Morton chipped-in six points.

It was a slow start offensively for the Camels as they didn't register their first field goal until midway through the first period. However, that Barber jumper triggered a 15-0 run to end the opening frame and give CU a 16-4 lead at the first intermission.

The first four points of the second period went to the Camels to make it a 19-0 run and a 20-4 advantage. Deja McCain hit a layup to finally break the Eagles' nine minute scoring drought with 6:45 showing on the clock. Central trailed 25-12 with 4:05 left in the first half before the CU held them off the board for the remainder of the second period and took the 17-point lead to the locker room.

Campbell outscored NCCU 32-14 in the paint and 10-0 on fast break chances. CU held a 38-30 rebounding advantage and went 10-of-15 from the free throw line. The Camels also assisted on 15-of-24 made baskets. Breanna Foster scored four points and had a steal in her first collegiate start while Caroline Bowns and MaKala Rouse each scored three points. Rouse also tallied a career-high six assists.

Following a break for the Thanksgiving holiday, Campbell will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 29 against Western Carolina on the road. Tipoff is set for noon as a part of the Catamounts' Education Day festivities.
