EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Campbell falls to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 24-18 on Saturday afternoon in Southern Conference action. The Camels move to 2-13 on the season, 2-4 in the SoCon while the Cougars improve to 5-10, 3-3.
The match started with back-to-back wins for the Camels as Collin Stewart recorded a 19-2 tech fall over Joe Antonelli at 125-pounds. Nathan Kraisser (133-lbs.) followed with his seventh fall of the season by pinning Dakota Leach in 4:51.
SIUE took the next three weight classes by decisions pulling within two points (11-9) of the Camels heading into a short intermission. Trevor Feagans, John Fahy and Eric Travers each took their respective weight classes over the Camels Zack Barker (141-lbs.), Kaleb Warner (149-lbs.) and Quentin Perez (157-lbs.).
Coming out of the intermission Paul Duggan pulled out a close win at 165-pounds by a decision of 3-2 after factoring in one point for his riding time of 1:28. Duggan's decision over Nate Higgins gave the Camels a five-point lead (14-9) in the team score.
Connor McMahon gave the Cougars their first lead of the match (15-14) by pinning Alex Vosburgh in 4:27 at 174-ponds. Ville Heino gave the Camels the lead again after earning a 22-8 major decision over Derek Nagel. Heino's major put Campbell ahead 18-15 with two weight classes left.
SIUE closed out the match with a 19-3 tech fall at 197-pounds and an 8-0 major decision at heavyweight to win the match 24-18.
The Camels return to the mat as they come home to Carter Gym on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. for senior night against Davidson. The coaches and team will honor redshirt senior Paul Duggan before their season finale match.
