BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Men's tennis fell 6-1 to Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon at the James R. Nisbet Tennis Center. The Camels move to 1-5 on the season while the Mountaineers improve to 5-3.
The match started with the teams squaring off in doubles matches. The Mountaineers gained the early advantage over the Camels as they won the number 2 and 3 doubles matches to clinch the team point.
Lukas Schaefer and Jonathan O'Neal were in tiebreaker sets with the score six all, before their match against Casey and Maddocks was called.
Heading into the singles matchups, Campbell trailed 1-0 to App State. The Mountaineers continued to pull ahead of the Camels as their No. 3 player, Jack Maddocks, defeated Nicolas Rakitin 6-3, 6-2.
The No. 5 and 6 matches were the next to conclude as Dustin Werner fell 6-4, 6-2 to Trey Morris and Louis Monterosso dropped his match 6-4, 6-4 to Zach Bost at the No. 6 slot.
Gerard Sola concluded his match against Jan-Willem Kleynhans to earn the only team point for Campbell. Sola took the No. 4 match 7-6, 6-4, leaving the top two pairings remaining.
Appalachian State won the two remaining matches to claim the 6-1 victory. Oliver Casey took the number two match as he defeated Lorenz Schwab 6-3, 6-4 putting the team score at 5-1 in favor of the Mountaineers.
Scott Webster took the final match after going three sets against Schaefer. Schaefer moved to a 3-3 individual record after falling 6-4, 2-6, 5-7 on Saturday afternoon.
Campbell returns to action as it hosts Elon on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. at the James R. NisbetTennis Center.
