NORFOLK, Va. --- Old Dominion registered the game-winning goal with just eight seconds on the clock and the Monarchs claimed a narrow 12-11 victory over Campbell on Saturday afternoon. Erica Hitch led the Camels (0-2) with six points on four goals and two assists.
Facing an 11-10 deficit, CU corralled an ODU (2-0) turnover and set up in the offensive zone with 1:36 left to play. With just 34 seconds on the clock, Hitch found Loren Day for the game-tying goal (11-11).
The Monarchs won the ensuing draw control and raced towards the goal. Hannah Lamb was whistled for a foul in front of the goal to give ODU a free-position attempt with 12 seconds on the clock. Connor Carson took the attempt and registered the game-winning goal just a couple seconds later. Ashmore Standing won the final draw control as the Monarchs earned the thrilling victory.
Loren Day scored four goals for Campbell, who out-shot Old Dominion 34-29. Sara Paul registered her first career points with a goal and an assist while Melissa Placek also scored her first career goal. Rebecca Sheinfeld tallied her first goal of the season while Day won a game-high six draw controls.
Carson led ODU with three goals while Natalie Ledwentz, Mary McCaleb and Alex Danks each scored twice. Maggie Buckley earned the win in goal with 14 saves while Merredith Bechler was dealt the loss despite seven stops.
The game featured nine ties and five lead changes. Day put CU on the scoreboard just 35 seconds into the contest, but ODU answered with back-to-back goals to take its first lead of the game at 2-1 with 23:41 to play in the first half.
Campbell answered with two-straight goals to take a 3-2 lead before Old Dominion went back-to-back again to take a 4-3 advantage with 6:07 left in the opening half. Sheinfeld tied the game at 4-4 with a goal at the 1:18 mark and Placek's tally with 15 seconds left in the first gave CU a 5-4 lead at halftime.
Each side traded goals to open the second half as the Camels held a 7-6 lead with 23:23 left to play. Paul gave CU a two-goal cushion with a score at the 16:46 mark. However, the Monarchs rolled off four-straight goals to take a 10-8 lead with 11:30 on the clock.
Hitch cut the lead in half when she found the back of the cage with 8:23 left to play. She followed it up with her fourth score of the day to tie the game at 10-10 with 6:32 on the clock. Three minutes later, Ledwentz scored to give ODU an 11-10 lead with 3:15 left to play as the game headed toward its crazy final minute.
Campbell will return to the field for its home opener at Barker-Lane Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 28 against Fresno State. First draw is set for 11 a.m.
