NCAA RELEASE
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The NCAA office announced the allocations by conference and weight in preparation for the National Championships held at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Thursday afternoon. Also announced were the final RPI and Coaches ranks of the top-33 wrestlers at each weight class.
In total, 330 grapplers will make the trip to New York from across the nation. With 284 spots to the championship allocated, that leaves four at-large bids for the 141, 157, 174 and 197 weight classes and five at-large bids for 125, 133, 149, 165, 184 and 285.
The Southern Conference received 13 automatic bids to the NCAA Championship. Representing the SoCon in New York will be the champion of each weight class as well as the first runner-up at 157-pounds and the first two runners-up at 285-pounds.
In addition to the announcement of allocations, the NCAA released the final rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches ranking. For a wrestler to earn a rank among the RPI list, he must have wrestled in at least 17 Division I matches at his given weight class.
Grapplers who earned ranks on the coaches panel were chosen from a pool of coaches representing the wrestling conferences. He must also have wrestled within the last 30 days and have competed against five Division I opponents.
Campbell wrestling had three grapplers represented in the RPI ranks and two in the coaches panel. Nathan Kraisser and Paul Duggan made both lists while Ville Heino earned a spot on the RPI list.
Kraisser earned a No. 21 rank in the RPI while earning the No. 23 spot in the coaches panel at 133-pounds. He finished the regular season with a 30-7 overall record including 27 Division I wins, a 15-1 dual record and went 7-0 against SoCon opponents.
Duggan also made an appearance on both lists coming in at No. 33 in the RPI and No. 29 in the coaches ranks. He earned his 20th win of the season on senior night (Feb. 19) against Davidson as he recorded a 19-2 technical fall over Adam Flatt. Duggan has 19 Division I wins, a 12-4 dual record and went 5-2 in SoCon match-ups.
Heino was the last of the Campbell grapplers to make either list as he earned the No. 33 and final spot on the RPI list. Heino finished with a 23-11 overall record, including 22 Division I wins, an 11-5 dual record and a 5-2 record in SoCon duals.
