BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell men's tennis takes to the courts on Saturday, Feb. 27 as they host Gardner-Webb in the conference opener at the James R. Nisbet Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
Campbell (1-5)
The Camels last played six days ago on Feb. 20 against Appalachian State. The Mountaineers defeated the Camels by a 6-1 margin. The match scheduled against Elon for Tuesday, Feb. 23, was postponed due to rain and unplayable court conditions.
Gerard Sola is 3-0 when playing in the No. 4 slot while Nicolas Rakitin has won a match at the No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 positions. Sola and Rakitin hold the best individual records on the team at 4-2.
Lukas Schaefer, primarily the No. 1 player, is 2-3 when playing the first position and 1-0 at No. 2. Lorenz Schwab is 3-2 at No. 2 and 0-1 when playing No. 1. Both sit 3-3 in singles competition.
Freshman Dustin Werner has gone 2-4 so far this season playing at the No. 5 spot while sophomore Jonathan O'Neal (0-4) is searching for his first individual win of the season.
In doubles action, Schaefer and O'Neal are 3-2 in duals. They won their last doubles match on Friday, Feb. 19 when they defeated Ignacio Garrido and Ankush Arora from USC Upstate 6-2.
The Schwab/Rakitin and Sola/Werner duos both have gone 1-3 in doubles action.
Gardner-Webb (2-6)
The Runnin' Bulldogs come into the game after playing a doubleheader on Feb. 20. GWU fell to UNC Greensboro 5-3 and swept the Aggies of N.C. A&T 7-0 to split the days matches.
Leading the way for Gardner-Webb is Nikita Zverkov with a 4-4 singles record at the No. 2 position. Maximilian Scholl and Benjamin Kaszas each have three individual dual wins with 3-5 and 3-2 records respectively.
In the doubles pairings, Kaszas and Scholl have shown the most success with a 4-2 record playing primarily in the No. 3 position. Zverkov and Yaroslav Prostakov hold a 3-5 doubles record while Paul Hogan and Jonathan Walker are 3-4 in doubles duals.
Series History…
The two teams are familiar opponents with both being members of the Big South and natural instate rivals. Campbell and Gardner-Webb have met every year for the last 12 years and the Orange and Black have taken every match. During the last encounter, the Camels squeaked by with the 4-3 win over the Runnin' Bulldogs.
