BUIES CREEK, N.C. – For the sixth time this season, Chris Clemons of Campbell University has been named Big South Conference men's basketball freshman of the week. The 5-foot-9 guard from Raleigh averaged 22 points and 4.5 rebounds in a pair of games for the Camels.
Clemons set a school record for most points scored in a season (544) during CU's regular season finale Saturday against Winthrop. He scored 25 points against the Eagles, his eighth 25-plus point outing of the year. Clemons broke the previous record of 536 points, set in 2006-07 by Jonathan Rodriguez, who went on to become Campbell's all-time leading scorer with 2153 career points.
His 544 points is the fourth-most scored by a freshman in Big South history. Including Thursday's 19-point effort vs. Radford, Clemons has scored in double figures in 28 of Campbell's 29 games. He is fourth among Big South scoring leaders (18.8) – tops among freshmen – and leads the league in 3-pointers per game (3.1), while ranking second in free throw percentage (.841).
Clemons is the country's seventh-leading freshman scorer.
Host Campbell opens play Thursday in the first round of the Big South Championship at 7:00 p.m. in Gore Arena against Gardner-Webb. Longwood and Charleston Southern start the festivities at 2:00 p.m., followed by Radford against Presbyterian at 4:30 p.m.
