LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Campbell put in a strong effort against the league-leading Liberty Flames but was dealt a 67-55 loss on Tuesday night at the Vines Center. RaeChaun Edwards recorded a double-double for the Lady Camels (8-14, 3-10 BSC) with 12 points and 10 assists.
MaKala Rouse tallied 10 points and three assists for CU while Tiffany Daniel added seven points off the bench. Jessica Pone scored six points while Edwards pulled down a team-high five rebounds.
An Edwards layup opened the fourth period to cut the Liberty (15-8, 12-2) lead to five at 46-41. Later in the frame, Amanda Coffer hit a layup to draw Campbell within six of the lead (50-42), but LU responded with a 7-2 run to take an 11-point advantage with 4:15 to play.
CU was only able to get back within nine for the rest of the way as Liberty took its largest lead of the game at 65-50 with just under a minute on the clock. Rouse finished the game on a high note for the Lady Camels with a late three, but Liberty claimed the 12-point victory.
Catherine Kearney led three Flames in double-figures with 14 points, eight coming in the fourth period. Katelyn Adams pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds with 10 points while Mickayla Sanders also tallied 10.
It was an exciting opening half that featured seven lead changes. A Pone three pointer capped a 7-2 start to the game for the Lady Camels. Later, a three by Sanders tied the game at nine and Liberty took its first lead of the game on a pair of Ashley Rininger free throws.
Each team traded back-to-back baskets before Summer Price hit a layup in the final minute of the frame to give CU a 15-14 advantage after the first.
A 5-0 spurt for the Flames broke a nearly four minute scoring drought and earned a 21-17 advantage midway through the second. The Liberty lead grew to six before layups by Qua Brown and Edwards cut the deficit to 23-21 with 2:53 to play before the halftime break.
After a Brown jumper kept the Flames' lead at two, Liberty reeled off seven straight points to end the second and take a 32-23 lead at the half.
Sanders gave Liberty its first double-digit lead of the game at 35-25 early in the third period and an 8-0 run pushed the advantage to 38-25 with 5:18 on the clock. A 3:37 scoring drought for CU was broken up by a Rouse three and cut the deficit back to 10.
Daniel scored five-straight points to help cut into the lead, and she tallied the last points of the frame as CU headed to the fourth period trailing 46-39.
The Lady Camels forced 22 Liberty turnovers and turned them into 19 points. CU also had a 19-15 edge in assists and 10-5 edge in steals. LU held a 45-22 rebounding advantage but was held without a single fast break point.
The Lady Camels will return to Gore Arena and will host Longwood on Saturday for its annual Play 4Kay game to benefit breast cancer research. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
