BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- After rallying from an early second half three-goal deficit, Campbell suffered a 15-14 overtime defeat at Furman on Friday night. Loren Day led the Camels (3-5) with five goals while Erica Hitch had five points on four assists and one goal.
Facing a 13-11 deficit with 7:44 remaining, Day scored back-to-back goals to knot the game at 13-13 with just under three minutes to play. With 1:20 on the clock, Annie Pazulski took a feed from Hitch and found the back of the cage for the go-ahead goal. Pazulski won the ensuing draw control but turned the ball over to the Paladins (5-3), who then tied the game with 1:02 on the clock.
Paige Gamble won the next draw for Furman, but Amanda Chasin caused a turnover and had the ground ball to and gave CU for a chance to win the game in regulation. Following a timeout, the Camels set up in the offensive zone with 22 seconds to play. Day was able to get off a pair of shots before time ran out but both were saved by Paladin goalie Courtney Baker.
Furman won the opening draw in overtime and put a quick shot on frame, but it was stopped by Campbell goalie Merredith Bechler. Devon Horine was able to pick up the ground ball off the deflection and dished to Meg Lingo, who scored the game-winning goal for Furman. It was the Paladins' second-straight overtime win over Campbell after taking last year's contest in Buies Creek.
Kayla Reilly and Pazulski each registered a pair of goals for the Camels. Mackenzie Koeller, Kaki Armiger and Melissa Placek also found the back of the cage while Sami Smit also scored her first career goal. Reilly added a game-high four ground balls.
Furman erased a 5-4 halftime deficit with four goals in the first four minutes of the second half to jump ahead 8-5. Campbell cut the lead to one with back-to-back scores from Day and Pazulski before another Furman goal made it 10-8.
The Camels responded with three unanswered goals to move ahead 11-10 with 9:39 to play, re-taking the lead for the first time in the second stanza. However, three-straight goals for Furman made the score 13-11.
The incredible back-and-forth game featured seven ties and six lead changes. The Paladins held a 20-11 advantage on the draw and out-shot the Camels 33-31. CU was 0-5 on free-position shots and committed 16 turnovers compared to 14 Paladin blunders.
Hannah Feinburg and Gamble led Furman with four goals each while Horine and Lingo scored three. Baker earned the win in goal making six saves despite giving up nine scores. Bechler took the loss despite 11 saves.
After an early Paladin goal in the second minute of play, Day struck with her first score to tie the game at 1-1. Armiger gave the Camels their first lead of the game and made it back-to-back goals on a swift pass from Hitch with 24:41 left in the first half. Feinburg tied the game at 2-2 with a goal for Furman with 20:28 on the clock.
Three minutes later, Day found the back of the cage for the second time as CU took a 3-2 advantage. Once again, the Paladins would answer though as Feinburg scored her second to knot the game at 3-3.
After gaining solid control in the offensive end, the Camels connected on back-to-back goals just 10 seconds apart and took the first multi-goal advantage of the game at 5-3 and 5:50 to play before halftime. Placek and Reilly registered the goals in the scoring spurt. The Paladins drew back within one with a late first half goal as CU took a 5-4 advantage to the break.
The Camels will play their final non-conference game of the season on Sunday at Mercer. First draw from Macon, Georgia is set for noon.
