MACON, Ga. --- Campbell scored 10 unanswered goals en route to a 15-3 victory over Mercer in women's lacrosse action from Macon, Georgia on Sunday afternoon. Erica Hitch led the Camels (4-5) with eight points on a pair of goals and six assists, which matched a program-best single game record.
Loren Day led all scorers with six goals, matching a season-high set at VCU. Overall, eight Camels finished in the scoring column. Mackenzie Koeller found the back of the cage twice while Melissa Placek, Rebecca Sheinfeld, Carter Koontz, Annie Pazulski and Kayla Reilly scored once. Sheinfeld and Day also added assists.
Sheinfeld put Campbell on the board early with a goal in the second minute before Day went back-to-back to give CU a 3-0 advantage nine minutes in. Mercer (2-6) answered with two goals in a one minute span to cut the deficit to 3-2 with 18:24 left to play in the first half.
Koeller tallied a score one minute later to increase the lead to 4-2. After an eight minute scoring drought for both sides, the Camels reeled off seven-straight goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half to take a commanding 11-2 lead at halftime. Day had three of her goals during the scoring run while Hitch tallied both of hers during the stretch.
Koeller and Day finished the 10-0 scoring run with the first two goals of the second half as the Camel advantage grew to 13-2 with 21 minutes left to play. Lindsey Zeltwanger scored a goal for the Bears to break up the long drought at the 18 minute mark of the second stanza. Koontz and Placek tallied the final two goals for CU in the last 10 minutes of play as the Camels earned their largest victory of the season.
The three goals surrendered was the fewest goals allowed in program history. Merredith Bechler earned the win in goal while the Camel defense allowed just seven shots. Hitch picked up a game-high five ground balls while Erin O'Hara added four. Day had a game-high four draw controls.
Haleigh Wurzell took the loss in the cage for Mercer despite 15 saves on 37 Campbell shots. Erica Coyne and Haleigh Brooks each had a goal for the Bears.
Campbell will return to action and open Big South Conference play on Saturday, March 26 on the road at Gardner-Webb. First draw from Boiling Springs, North Carolina is set for 1 p.m.
