Camels drop 6-1 to the Buccaneers in early week conference matchup

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Charleston Southern defeated Campbell 6-1 Monday afternoon at the James R. Nisbet Tennis Center in Big South conference action. The Buccaneers improved to 9-2, 4-0 while the Camels fell to 8-6, 2-3.

The Bucs got the early lead taking the doubles point, going three-of-three in doubles sets. Doubles one and two went quickly with CSU earning the 6-3 and 6-2 wins respectively, but Maud Mrad and Ewa Telenga pushed Annika Wagner and Kimberley Koerner to a 7-5 finish on court three.

In singles action, Koerner defeated Claire Bedi on court five in straight sets (6-4, 6-0) and Valeria Koussenkova beat Telenga on six by a score of 6-2, 6-4.

The remaining four courts would decide the match and all were close finishes. Irina Karangozishvili gave the Camels their first point (3-1) by defeating Nicolin Luecke on court one 6-3, 6-4. The two athletes shared co-player of the week laurels two weeks back, on March 9.

Isabel Boada dropped her first set to Gabriela Srodowski and forced a tiebreaker in the second but dropped 7-2 in the tiebreaker serves securing the match for Charleston Southern.

Courts two and three continued to play with each going three sets in exciting back-and-forth action. Georgina Segarra on court two dropped the first set 6-4 and came back to win the second in an 8-6 tiebreak. In the third set, Segarra led early, but Sophie Cloessner came back to win 10-7 for CSU's fifth team point.

The match between Mrad and Brianna Thompson went back-and-forth much like the match on court two. Mrad took set one in a 6-2 decision while Thompson won set two 6-4. Mrad led in the third set but Thompson came back to tie the match and force a tiebreak round. Thompson took the third set in a 7-2 tiebreaker to win the match for CSU 6-1.

The Camels have a few days off from play after playing three matches over the last five days. Campbell returns to the courts Friday and Saturday as they travel to Winthrop, Friday at 1 p.m. and UNC Asheville on Saturday at 10 a.m.
