Day's seven goals lead Campbell to 20-10 win against Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Campbell matched its highest scoring output of the season, taking a 20-10 victory against Gardner-Webb inside Spangler Stadium Saturday afternoon to open Big South play. The 20 goals scored match a season-high for the team, a mark they recorded March 3 against St. Francis (Pa.).

Loren Day notched seven goals during the game, her highest single-game total of the season. She now has 41 goals on the year, moving her into first overall in goals scored in NCAA Division I. Day and Erica Hitch each recorded a game-high eight points for Campbell.

CU jumped out to a quick two goal advantage 2:15 into the contest as Day and Melissa Placek each scored, both of which were assisted by Hitch. 30 seconds after Placek scored, Alex Fusco scored for Gardner-Webb, cutting the score to 2-1. The Camels jumped out to another two-goal lead as Day added a pair to her total.

Gardner-Webb added its second goal, courtesy of Fusco to trim Campbell's lead to 4-2. The Fighting Camels used five different scorers in a 3:35 span to take a commanding seven-goal advantage, 9-2 with 11:21 remaining in the half. Gardner-Webb scored twice to cut the lead to 9-4, but Hitch, Placek and Sami Smit each scored in a 1:55 span to increase the lead to 12-4 in favor of Campbell.

In the opening two minutes of the second half, the Orange and Black scored twice, Day's fifth and Kayla Reilly's second gave Campbell a 14-6 lead. Gardner-Webb scored three times from three different scorers to cut the lead to five, 14-9, causing Campbell to use a timeout.

Following the Campbell timeout, Reilly scored her third of the game, which began a surge of six consecutive goals for the Camels. Day scored twice along with goals from Carter Koontz, Placek and Hitch to give Campbell a 20-9 lead.

With a running clock and an 11-goal advantage, Campbell allowed the clock to dwindle down in the second half. Gardner-Webb scored one more goal, a free position shot with 3:42 remaining, but failed to score again as Campbell took the 20-10 victory.

Hitch recorded five assists during her eight-point performance. Placek notched four goals on the day on four shots. Placek and Day also finished with a game-high six draw controls. For the Runnin' Bulldogs, Fusco led the way with three goals on three shots along with Amanda Steinmuller and Austyn Gorski who each scored twice.

Campbell's 55.6% shooting percentage tied a season-high, last recorded against St. Francis (Pa.). The Camels outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs 36-21 on the day including 16-9 in the second half.

Campbell lacrosse returns to play Wednesday evening, March 30 at 7 p.m. against High Point inside Barker-Lane Stadium.
