GEORGETOWN, S.C. – Nadine White won individual honors and Campbell claimed the team title following Wednesday's final round of the Big South Conference women's golf championship at DeBordieu Club. Annelie Sjoholm was individual runner-up and Tahnia Ravnjak finished third as Campbell claimed its third Big South title in the last five years and secured the league's automatic berth to the NCAA regionals.
With winds gusting to 25 miles per hour, Campbell (296-293-305—894) defeated runner-up Coastal Carolina (294-297-313—904) by 10 strokes and will advance to one of four regionals May 5-7 hosted by Stanford, Texas A&M, LSU or Alabama.
The victory was the 13th conference title in 25 years under the direction of head coach John Crooks, who was named league coach of the year for the 12th time on the women's side. The 2016 crown was Campbell's fifth as a Big South Conference member (1993, 1994, 2012, 2014, 2016). CU won eight league titles as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference from 1995-2011.
All five Camels placed among the top 15 individuals as Louise Latorre was 13th and Ayelen Irizar tied for 15th on a day when only one golfer in the 44-player field shot par or better.
"You have good players accept the challenge," said Crooks. "There were a lot of situations out there today that without skills and confidence, they could have folded their tent and had a tough day. At key times, they made some great swings and great putts. This championship was well-deserved."
Not only did Campbell provide Crooks with his 79th tournament title on the women's side – second-most among active Division I head coaches – but the Camels finished one-two-three in the league tourney for the second time in three years. Latorre, Ravnjak and Kaylin Yost claimed the first three spots in the 2014 championship at The Patriot GC in Ninety Six, S.C.
"I have five young ladies on the team, and three more back home. All eight compete every day as hard as they can. The ones that finished one-two-three here today certainly deserve it, and hopefully it'll motivate the other two," said Crooks.
After trailing by two following Monday's opening round, the Camels shot the low score of the day on both Tuesday (293) and Wednesday (305) to secure the title. The Camels led the field in par-three (+2) and par-five (+4) scoring and in birdies (39).
White claimed Campbell's 10th individual conference medal since Janet Wooten won the 1993 Big South title and earned her fifth top five showing of the year by finishing at 3-over 219 (73-70-76) on the par-72, 6082-yard DeBordieu layout. The junior from Brisbane, Australia led the field with 11 birdies over 54 holes and by playing the par-three holes at six under. White tied for second in par-five scoring (-1) and also made 33 pars over three days.
In addition to her medalist award, White was named Big South player of the year and to the all-conference and all-championship teams in the post-tournament award ceremony.
Sjoholm claimed her best collegiate finish by shooting 71-75-77—223 to place one stroke in front of Ravnjak (75-73-76—224) and Coastal Carolina's Malene Krolboll Hansen (77-72-75—224). A sophomore from Vasteras, Sweden, Sjoholm led the field in par-four scoring (+5) and was fourth with eight birdies. She earned all-conference and all-championship team recognition in addition to securing a spot on the Big South women's golf all-academic team.
Ravnjak claimed her third top-five showing in four years of Big South Championship play following a fourth-place tie in 2013 and her runner-up finish one year later. The senior from Cordeaux Heights, Australia became the 12th player in Big South history to be named all-conference four-straight years while also gaining all-championship honors. She tied for second in scoring on the par-four (+2) and par-five (-1) holes and finished third with nine birdies.
A junior from Pau, France, Latorre (80-75-76—231) claimed a third-straight top-15 finish in the conference championship and took home all-conference honors for the third-consecutive year. A sophomore from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Irizar turned in the second-best finish of her collegiate career (77-75-82—234).
With the program's 19th NCAA regional berth secured, Crooks says the team's focus will change in preparation for the May 5-7 event.
"The regionals are a little different mindset," said Crooks. "We've already won. Now it's time for dessert. We can go out and maybe be a little more aggressive and see how good we can play without looking over our shoulders. Our athletic director, Bob Roller, has put some banners up in the convocation center, and it's always nice to add to those."
The NCAA Regional field will be announced April 25.
