ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Campbell dropped its first game in its last five outings with a 15-4 loss at Big South Conference leaders Winthrop on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles' Shannon Gallagher led all players with five points on four goals and an assist.
The Camels fall to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in the Big South but is still guaranteed to finish with a winning record in the league for the first time in program history. Four Campbell players each finished with a goal including NCAA scoring leader Loren Day, who tallied her 59th goal of the season. Reigning Big South Attacker of the Week Kayla Reilly netted her 23rd score of the year.
Erica Hitch, who entered the game as the NCAA co-leader for assists, added to total with her 42nd helper of the season. Carter Koontz and Melissa Placek also found the back of the cage for CU. Day and Placek each had a team-high three draw controls while Megan Reilly led the way defensively with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Winthrop (15-2, 6-0) tallied four unanswered goals over the first 10 minutes of action. Koontz put the Camels on the board with a free position goal to cut the deficit to 4-1 with 10:23 left in the first half. The Eagles answered a 3-0 run before Day scored the final goal of the first half to make the Winthrop lead 7-2 at the break.
It was all Winthrop to start the second half as the Eagles reeled off six-straight goals over the first 18 minutes over the final stanza. Kayla Reilly scored from the free position with 7:26 left to play before Placek scored with 2:02 on the clock. WU finished the game with a goal right before time expired to complete the final tally.
Katie Clark, Allie Yeager and Kristen Shriver each recorded three goals to help the Eagles remain undefeated in conference play. Gallagher added a game-high five caused turnovers and four ground balls. Alaina Girani earned the win in goal with six saves. Merredith Bechler took the loss giving up nine goals while making four saves. Kylie Haarhoff also played 23 minutes in the Camel cage.
Campbell will wrap-up its best regular season in program history next Saturday when it plays host to Longwood at 2 p.m. Prior to the game, the Camels will honor its six seniors that started the program four years ago as freshmen.
