Softball drops to Coastal Carolina Wednesday night

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – A 10-run top of the sixth inning helped Coastal Carolina to its 15-2 victory against Campbell in game three of their Big South series inside Amanda Littlejohn Stadium Wednesday evening.

Katie Baker went 2-for-3 for Campbell, scoring both runs for the home side, including a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Coastal Carolina had six batters drive in runs on the evening, including three RBIs for Timi Tooley.

Coastal Carolina (29-19, 12-5) used 16 batters in the top of the sixth inning, scoring 10 runs on seven hits to open up the game to a 15-2 advantage. After recording the first out, the next three batters reached base and loaded the bases for the visitors. A pair of singles, with a walk in-between, opened the scoring as Coastal Carolina had 11 consecutive batters reach base in the inning.

Campbell (20-27, 6-12) scored its first run of the contest in the bottom of the third inning. Trailing 4-0, Baker reached on a single to left center. After advancing on a wild pitch and groundout, Rachel McCollum connected on a double to right field, scoring Baker.

After Coastal added its lone run in the top of the fifth, Campbell answered back in the bottom half in the inning. On a 0-2 count, Baker blasted her second home run of the season, into the Campbell bullpen beyond the left field wall.

With Baker's single in the third inning, she extended her hitting streak to five games. McCollum also continued her hitting streak, extending it to six games with her RBI single in the third inning.

Baker pitched 4 2/3 innings in the loss, striking out seven batters on the evening. She drops to 6-11 on the year. Ashley Guillette pitched a complete game and improved to 8-6 for the Chanticleers. Tooley and Mackenzie Conrad combined for four hits and five RBIs for the Chanticleers.

Prior to Wednesday's contest, Campbell presented a check to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for its fundraising efforts during the beginning of the season and its "Camels For A Cure" game. Julie McQueen and Diane Kerkhoff, breast cancer survivors and Susan G. Komen representatives, were the recipients of the donation as head coach Todd Bradley, freshman Rachel McCollum and her father, a cancer survivor, presented the check during the pregame ceremony.

Campbell returns to action Friday at 6 p.m. against Winthrop with a doubleheader slated for Saturday evening.
