Camels edged by Lancers in regular season finale

BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- Longwood rallied from a four-goal deficit and claimed a narrow 13-12 victory over Campbell in both team's 2016 regular season finale on Saturday. Campbell's Loren Day led all scorers with five goals and added a pair of assists.

Despite the loss, the Camels (9-8, 5-2 BSC) still clinched the third seed in the upcoming Big South Championship. It is CU's highest seed in program history and with it comes to the right to host a quarterfinal game at Barker-Lane Stadium for the first time. The Camels will take on sixth-seeded Longwood (8-9, 4-4) in a rematch next Saturday at noon.

Facing an 11-8 deficit, the Lancers scored three unanswered goals to tie the game at 11-11 with 6:05 left to play. Sarah Butler gave Longwood its first lead of the second half on a free position goal with 4:55 on the clock to cap a 4-0 run. The Camels were able to answer when Melissa Placek took a pass from Rebecca Sheinfeld in transition and scored to tie the game at 12-12 with 2:18 remaining.

LWU won the ensuing draw control and quickly called a timeout after entering the attacking zone. The Lancers held possession for the next minute before Madison Stair fired a shot that was deflected by Campbell goalie Merredith Bechler.

Andie Decelis picked up the ground ball to allow Longwood to re-set its offense. With 34 seconds on the clock, Shiloh McKenzie created space for herself and fired a shot past Bechler to give the Lancers a 13-12 advantage. Stair earned a hard fought draw control after the game-winning goal and Longwood was able to run out the clock and claim the victory.

Kayla Reilly tallied five points on three goals and two assists for CU while Erica Hitch scored twice and had an assist. Placek and Sheinfeld each had two points on a goal and an assist and Mackenzie Koeller scored once. Kaki Armiger had an assist to go with three ground balls and three draw controls while Day led Campbell with four draw controls.

The Camels struck early with back-to-back goals from Day and Reilly to take a 2-0 advantage just over a minute into the contest. LWU answered back with three-straight goals to take its first lead of the game five minutes into the action.

Back-to-back goals for Day gave the lead right back to the Camels and kicked off a 5-0 spurt that increased the advantage to 7-3 with 12:21 left in the first half. Stair and Katie McHough tallied goals for LWU to cut the deficit to 7-5, but Sheinfeld scored with 11 seconds left it the opening frame to give the Camels an 8-5 advantage at halftime.

Hitch opened the second half scoring with a goal at the 24:32 mark to give CU a 9-5 advantage. Longwood responded with three unanswered goals to cut the lead to 9-8 with 14:44 left to play. Day and Hitch each scored in a one minute stretch to push the Camel advantage to 11-8 with 11:45 remaining.

Stair, McKenzie and McHough each had three goals and an assists for the Lancers while Sarah Butler had a pair of goals and a helper. Imani West earned the win in the cage with 14 saves on 33 shots while Bechler took the loss despite 12 stops. Campbell held a 15-12 advantage on the draw and a 20-16 advantage on ground balls.

Prior to the game Campbell honored its six seniors who played in their final regular season contest after starting their Camel careers as freshman in the 2013 inaugural campaign. CU has already set a new program record for wins in a season and will finish with at least a .500 overall record for the first time in program history. Campbell's five Big South victories are also a single-season record.
