Camels advance to Big South semis with 14-5 win over Longwood

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Campbell scored 10 unanswered goals and defeated Longwood 14-5 Saturday in a Big South Conference women's lacrosse championship quarterfinal game at Barker-Lane Stadium. CU finished with eight players in the scoring column led by three goals from Loren Day.

The third-seeded Camels (10-8) held the sixth-seeded Lancers (8-10) without a goal for more than 37 minutes and went on to record the first league tournament victory in the four-year-old program's history. Campbell is also now guaranteed to finish with an overall winning record for the first time in program history.

Day, the Big South offensive player of the year, added four assists for a game-high seven points. All-conference selection Erica Hitch tallied five points on three assists and a pair of goals for Campbell, which will face either second seed High Point in Thursday's 7 p.m. semifinal at Rock Hill, S.C.

Rebecca Sheinfeld, Mackenzie Koeller and Sara Paul each found the back of the cage twice, while Sheinfeld added an assist for a total of three points. Melissa Placek, Carter Koontz and Katlin Steinbauer also scored a goal for the Camels.

Merredith Bechler earned the win in the cage with six saves to help Campbell finish with one of its most impressive defensive performances of the season. Rose Prizzi caused a career-high four turnovers while Placek and Sheinfeld each had a game-high four ground balls. Placek tallied a career-high seven draw controls, which helped the Camels maintain possession for the majority of the game.

It was a competitive start to the day with the teams trading the game's first four goals. Sarah Butler put the Lancers on the board first before Sheinfeld tied the game at 1-1 five minutes into the contest. Katie McHugh struck for the Lancers three minutes later, but Koeller answered in the next possession as the game sat tied at 2-2 with 21:13 left to play in the first half.

Madison Stair and Riley Dolan scored back-to-back goals for the Lancers and gave them a 4-2 advantage with 13:47 left before halftime. Placek and Koontz responded with goals for CU and kicked off the long scoring run. With the game tied at 4-4 with 12:15 on the clock, the Camels continued the offensive onslaught and scored four unanswered goals to end the first stanza and take an 8-4 lead at the break.

As the Camels maintained possession, Hitch and Day each scored twice in the first 18 minutes of the second half to give Campbell a commanding 12-4 lead with 12:35 left to play and finish the 10-0 run. The Lancers finally got back on the board with a goal from Lisa Schell with 7:19 on the clock, but it was quickly answered with a strike from Steinbauer. Day capped the scoring with 1:25 left to play with her 191st career goal and her final score at Barker-Lane Stadium.

McHugh and Dolan each finished with two points for Longwood on a goal and an assist while Brianna Kelly tallied a game-high four ground balls. Imani West took the loss in goal despite six saves. The Camels held a 15-6 advantage on the draw and out-shot the Lancers 25-14.
