BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- Kaki Armiger picked off a pass with four seconds to go to preserve Campbell's narrow 11-10 victory over Liberty at Barker-Lane Stadium. Kayla Reilly led the Camels (8-6, 4-1 Big South) with a career-high seven points on a two goals and five assists.
Reilly's second goal of the game pushed the Campbell advantage to 11-8 with 3:27 left to play. The Flames (2-11, 1-3) forced a Camel turnover with 1:19 remaining before Brianna McCaffrey scored with just over a minute to play to cut the deficit to 11-9.
The Camels were whistled for a foul at the time of the goal, which gave a free draw control to the Flames. A foul on Amanda Chasin earned Liberty a free-position opportunity, which was converted with 38 seconds to go to draw within one goal of the lead (11-10). Erin O'Hara won the ensuing draw control for CU, but Armiger turned the ball over with 18 seconds left to give the Flames one chance at the game-tying goal.
Following a Liberty timeout, the Flames set up in the offensive zone with 15 seconds on the clock. McCaffrey zipped a pass in front of the goal, but Armiger intercepted the pass and took it the other way. She held onto the ball as the clock hit zero as the Camels held on for the win.
Armiger and Erica Hitch each tallied three points while Loren Day, the current NCAA scoring leader, finished with two goals. Melissa Placek and Carter Koontz also found the back of the cage twice to give Campbell six goal scorers. Chasin led CU's defensive effort with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Campbell jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first nine minutes of play with goals from Day, Placek and Hitch. Michaela Rich opened the Liberty scoring with a goal in the 10th minute, but Koontz answered with a score five minutes later to give CU a 4-1 advantage midway through the first half.
The Flames converted back-to-back goals to draw within 4-3 with 12:35 left in the first half. Four minutes later, a Placek goal kicked off a 4-0 run for the Camels over a seven minute stretch to increase the advantage to 8-3, the largest of the game, with 5:24 on the clock. Liberty cut the lead back to three at halftime with a pair of goals in the final minute before the break.
Day opened the second half scoring with an unassisted goal 10 minutes into the final stanza. Kallie Britton scored before Reilly tallied her second goal of the game to push the Campbell advantage to 10-6 with 10:39 left to play. Liberty's comeback began with back-to-back goals from Abagail and Kallie Britton that cut the deficit to 10-8 with 8:03 left in the game.
Kayla Foster and Hannah Pridemore led the Flames with three points each while McCaffrey and Kallie Britton each had a pair of goals. Aubrie Tarris took the loss in goal with three saves in the first half while Katherine Wadrick made there saves in the second half. Merredith Bechler earned the win for the Camels while making four stops.
The Camels will return to action with a pair of road games next week starting on Wednesday at Presbyterian in a 2 p.m. start.
