Campbell partners with Bluefield College for endowed scholarships

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Not only will Campbell University open its 2016 football season at home on Sept. 1 vs. Bluefield College, but both institutions will use the date to raise funds for endowed scholarships.  Those endowments share a name familiar at both schools.

Daniel Gene Bowman was a Bluefield alum and former Dean of Students (2001-05), passing in Jan. 2014 after a courageous bout with cancer.  Dan's brother, Andy, is the Director of Continuing Education and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Campbell University, who also serves as sideline reporter for Fighting Camel Football broadcasts.

Since Dan Bowman's passing, many of those who loved him have inquired about establishing something in his memory.  Through the cooperation of two Baptist institutions of higher learning, Campbell University and Bluefield College, located in Bluefield, Va., have decided to team up and memorialize Dan with two endowed student scholarships.

The Daniel G. Bowman ("DB") Memorial Scholarship, will be an endowed scholarship at Campbell University's College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and given to an academically gifted student who has a strong interest in oncology and pharmacy.  The Daniel G. Bowman ("Dean Dan") Memorial Scholarship will be an endowed scholarship at Bluefield College given to an academically gifted student from Virginia who exhibits financial need. As Dan courageously fought cancer, scholarship recipients should have a personal or familial journey with this disease.

Please note, gifts to both scholarships will be split evenly – 50 percent to each institution.  In honoring the Bowman family's wishes, funds will not be designated to one school over the other.  The scholarship proceeds will memorialize Dan and benefit both institutions equally.

On Thursday, Sept., 1, Campbell will host Bluefield in the (unofficial) "Bowman Bowl."  The Bowman family will be in attendance and both teams will honor Dan.
