BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Fighting Camels never trailed against the American Eagles as they won their second-straight contest, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Eakes Athletic Complex.
Senior midfielder Payton Ormsby led the way for Campbell as she tallied five points on the afternoon with two goals and one assist. Campbell's next two goals came from sophomore Skylar Wilcox and redshirt junior Nicole Connolly.
"We had two really good goals from Payton [Ormsby] that really got us going. She has a knack of scoring really nice, clean goals," said head coach Stuart Horne.
"When you've got two games in a weekend, the Sunday game is always a grind. It's never pretty. We showed that a little bit today, but on the bright side, we grinded it out and fought hard enough to get four goals. However, it's still a work in progress."
The scoring came early in the contest as Ormsby scored the game's first goal five minutes into the match. The shot came from 15 yards out off the cross from classmate Christine Kindt. Just six minutes later, Ormsby connected on her second goal of the afternoon off the double assist from freshmen Rosie O'Neal and Alexa Genas.
The next Campbell goal came in the 35th minute on a sophomore-to-sophomore connection from Amanda Crecelius to Wilcox. The shot came from the right side of the box and slipped right between the hands of the American goalkeeper, giving the Camels a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
The Eagles threatened in the second half with a goal from Yari Bradfield to cut the Camel lead to two. A hard shot from Eagle forward Madie Light was blocked by Camel keeper Natalya Marcove, but Bradfield was able to send it in off the deflection.
Campbell was quick to answer the American goal with a point blank shot from Connolly into the back of the net, assisted by Ormsby. The goal gave the Camels a 4-1 lead that would hold for rest of the contest.
Up next, the Camels will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide on Friday, Aug. 26 at 8:00 p.m. EDT at the Alabama Soccer Stadium.
"It's going to be a good trip. For part of our non-conference schedule, we put in a lot of adversity, whether it's with the opponent, the travel or the location. It's going to be a good test for our players. We just want to get down there and compete, go for a win and get better. We want our non-conference schedule to make us better for Big South conference play."
