BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After helping lead Campbell University to its fifth Golfweek Program Challenge combined title in six years, Max Theodorakis was named the Come Ready Nutrition Big South Conference freshman of the week.
In his collegiate debut, Theodorakis collected his first career top-20 individual showing by placing in a tie for 13th (67-76-68—211) at the Golfweek Program Challenge. In Tuesday's final round, the native of Danbury, Conn., played the final 10 holes at 5-under-par and finished the 54-hole event tied for eighth in the field with 14 birdies.
In his first career collegiate round, Theodorakis made 5 birdies in a bogey-free day on the par-72, 6982-yard True Blue Plantation Golf Club in Pawley's Island, SC. The 2016 Connecticut high school state champion was the low freshman among Big South golfers in the 80-man Program Challenge field.
The Golfweek Program Challenge, which includes a women's stroke play tournament at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and a men's tourney at True Blue Plantation, features teams from 16 schools across the country. Campbell finished second in both of this year's men's and women's tournaments to add to its run of combined crowns in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015.
Campbell's men (-28) and women (+14) finished a combined 14 strokes under par, 25 ahead of runner-up Jacksonville (+11), which won the men's event (-32). Boston College (+19), which claimed the women's tournament (+13) by one shot over Campbell, was third overall.
The Camel men next play Sept. 26-27 in the Mark Simpson Invitational at Colorado National in Erie, Colo.
