CARY, N.C. – Campbell cross country took part in the Adidas XC Challenge Friday evening in Cary, N.C. The men's team had a strong showing, placing fourth in the team rankings, while the women's team placed eighth among the 14 teams competing in the meet.
The Camels saw three top-10 finishes between the two teams. For the men, sophomore Lawrence Kipkoech finished first overall with a time of 17:42.0 in the men's 6K. Shortly behind him was senior Amon Terer who finished in 17:57.9, good for third in the men's race. On the women's side, Joan Maritim led the way for the Camels as she finished the women's 5K in 17:40.8, a new personal record, to place ninth overall.
The men's team finished fourth overall with 100 points, with five runners finishing in the top-50 in the men's 6K. Following Kipkoech and Terer, sophomore Meshack Kipruto was the next to finish for Campbell, completing the course in 18:36.8 to finish in 22nd place. Junior Jacob Kipserem had a solid outing as well for the Camels, clocking in at 19:10.4 to place 46th. In his first race as a Fighting Camel, sophomore transfer Kelvin Kirui crossed the finish line in 50th place, finishing in 19:19.6.
On the women's side, Campbell came in eighth place with 215 points. In addition to Maritim, Heidi Tuszkiewicz (19:16.0, 57th place) and Amina Alvarez-Barkane (19:19.3, 62nd place) set personal records in the women's 5K. Sophomore Roshae Jackson finished in 19:25.1 for 66th place, while freshman Lize Botha completed the course in 19:37.7 to place in 69th.
Up next, the men's team will travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take part in the UVA Panorama Farms Invitational at 10 a.m. at Friday, Sept. 23.
