CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – The Campbell men's cross country team, led by sophomore Lawrence Kipkoech, finished fourth in the team rankings at the UVA Panorama Farms Invitational Friday morning. Kipkoech completed the 8K course in 23:29.7 to set a Campbell record, good for second place overall in the meet.
Shortly behind Kipkoech was senior Amon Terer, who finished the 8K in 23:43.5 to come in third place. Sophomore Meshack Kipruto crossed the line next for CU, notching a 39th-place finish with a mark of 25:22.7. Finishing 13 seconds after Kipruto was junior Jacob Kipserem, who completed the course in 25:35.5. Sophomore transfer Kelvin Kirui and freshman Hunter Gilbert raced in their first 8K for the Camels and finished the course in 53rd and 66th place, respectively.
In a field of nationally prominent programs, the Campbell men rose to the occasion. The unranked Fighting Camels finished the meet in fourth place with 125 points, upsetting No. 4 Stanford who finished fifth with 139 points. No. 12 BYU finished first in the meet, followed by No. 1 Syracuse and No. 11 Virginia to round out the top three. View the full results from the meet here.
"Having our guys go two-three in this high quality field was great to see," said head coach Michael Kelly. "I believe Lawrence and Amon both ran about 20 to 25 seconds faster than they did at this same meet last year. We weren't bad as a team, but I know we can do way better when we get everyone racing to their full potential."
Up next, the Campbell men's and women's teams will return to action in the Asheville XC Challenge on Saturday, Oct. 1, set to begin at 9:00 a.m. For the most up-to-date information on Campbell cross country, follow @GoCamelsRun on Twitter.
