BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell men's and women's cross country teams are set to travel to Asheville, N.C. to take part in the Asheville XC Challenge, beginning at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Asheville Christian Academy.
The meet will provide the Camels with a preview for the Big South Cross Country Championships on Oct. 28, which also takes place in Asheville. The field of competing teams features a collection of Big South opponents, including host school UNC Asheville, High Point, Longwood, Presbyterian, Radford and Winthrop.
The first event in the meet is the men's college 8K, beginning at 9:15 a.m. For the Campbell men, a new slate of runners will be featured in Asheville while the top six rest and train in preparation for NCAA Pre-Nationals on Oct. 15. The CU men set to compete are Casper Duell, Graeme Fisher, Travis Gallimore, Billy Knabe, Hunter Query and Ka'Deem Wynn, who will see their first action since racing in the Adidas XC Challenge on Friday, Sept. 16.
The women's 5K will begin at approximately 10:15 a.m. The Campbell women most recently competed in the Adidas XC Challenge in Cary, N.C., finishing eighth out of 14 teams. Joan Maritim led the way for CU, completing the 5K course in 17:40.8 to finish ninth overall. Following that strong performance, she was named Big South Runner of the Week on Sept. 21. Heidi Tuszkiewicz and Amina Alvarez Barkane set new personal records in the meet and look to improve on those performances in Asheville. Rounding out the competitors for the Camels are Jade Baldwin, Ali Bowen, Aimee Fish, Madeline Fitch, Roshae Jackson, Jackie Koger, Megan Lanzon, Kelsey Rea, Logan Shearon and Kaelyn Yoder.
Following the meet, the men's and women's teams will go separate ways. The women's team will head to Kernersville, N.C. for the Wake Forest Invitational on Friday, Oct. 14 while the men travel to Terre Haute, Ind. for the NCAA Pre-Nationals on Saturday, Oct. 15.
