Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Fighting Camels (3-2-0) were strong on the attack as they defeated the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (2-3-1), 4-0, Sunday afternoon at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Freshmen Rosie O'Neal and Kelly Ann Evans each connected on their first collegiate goals for the Camels in the first half to give CU a 2-0 lead. The attack did not let up in the second as senior midfielders Payton Ormsby and Christine Kindt each blasted shots past the CSUB keeper to help solidify the victory.
The Camel defense remained poised throughout the contest to preserve the shutout. Freshman goalkeeper Natalya Marcove had a great presence in goal for CU as she recorded her second solo-shutout of the season and notched a career-high seven saves on the afternoon.
"In the past couple weeks, we've been doing a lot of good things but were just coming up short," said head coach Stuart Horne. "Now, we're taking advantage of our opportunities and doing what we need to do. We were a lot more composed today. It's always hard to score, and it's even harder to score four goals, so we did an awesome job with that this afternoon."
The scoring came early for the Camels as O'Neal sent one in from point-blank range off the cross from classmate Callie Beckwith in the second minute. The next Campbell goal came with five minutes left in the first half, as Evans found the back of the net off the double assist from senior Kine Thorsvik and redshirt junior Nicole Connolly. Connolly made the pass up field to Thorsvik, whose cross from the right side of the box was put in by Evans.
In the second half, the Camel offense kept the momentum going for CU. Ormsby's goal, a blast from the top of the box, came off a pass from Evans who was credited with her first career assist. Campbell's fourth and final goal came in the 76th minute, as a laser shot from Kindt sailed past the Roadrunner keeper off the cross from Thorsvik, giving her two assists on the day.
"One of the big questions a lot of people had coming in this year was, 'Who's going to score?'" Horne said. "With all the different goal-scorers we've had this year, we don't have to rely on one or two people. Our kids are feeling confident, and we're moving the ball around well enough to where kids can take those opportunities."
Up next, the Camels will hit the road for four-straight away matches before Big South Conference play begins. The team will travel to VMI on Friday, Sept. 9, USC Upstate on Sunday, Sept. 11, Stetson on Friday, Sept. 16 and North Florida on Sunday, Sept. 18.
