SFU rallies past Campbell 6-3 Sunday afternoon

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – St. Francis (Pa.) (4-1) scored five runs in the sixth inning en route to a 6-3 win over Campbell (3-2), Sunday afternoon inside Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

After Jordan Seneca drew a bases loaded walk to get the Red Flash on the board, Kindra Witthus hit a grand slam in the sixth to give St. Francis in the lead. 

Haydn Parker and Madison Casto recorded the lone hits of the game for the Camels. Casto singled to right field to score Jessica Anderson from third in the second inning and Parker recorded a 2-RBI single to centerfield in the fifth. 

CU opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. After Anderson reached on an error, she stole second then advanced to third on a wild pitch to get into scoring position. With two outs on the board, Casto connected on a RBI single to right centerfield to give the Camels a 1-0 lead.

A two-run fifth inning put Campbell ahead 3-0. With bases loaded and two outs, Parker connected on a 2-RBI single that scored Madison Herring from second and Casto from third.

St. Francis scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the 5-3 lead. After a walk loaded the bases, McKenzie Bower was hit in her at-bat to bring home the first run. Witthus, the next batter, connected on a grand slam over the left field wall.

The visitors added one more run in the top of the seventh inning as Seneca hit a solo home run to centerfield. Campbell was unable to get a runner aboard in the bottom of the seventh, to end the game.

Katie Baker, who relieved starter Megan Richards after the fifth inning, was tabbed with the loss with only one inning pitched. Richards pitched five innings and allowed only three hits on the afternoon. Ethel Santai earned her first win of the season with 2 1/3 innings pitched. 

Campbell finished the contest error-free, while St. Francis was charged with four errors in the contest. 

Campbell returns to action Feb. 17-19 at the USC Upstate Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C. Feb. 17 kicks off with a noon matchup vs. Iona and a 2 p.m. game vs. the host USC Upstate.
