Mozingo tallies four hit day during Saturday split

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Megan Mozingo had a pair of multi-hit games Saturday afternoon as Campbell split its two contests at the Furman/USC Upstate Classic.

Katie Baker pitched a complete game shutout in game one to earn her first win of the season, a 2-0 result over Iona.

The Camels (5-4) fell in game two to the hosts Furman, 5-3, despite four errors for the home side.

Game one: Campbell 2, Iona 0

Combined with Rachel McCollum's fifth home run of the season and Baker's complete game win, Campbell knocked off Iona 2-0 Saturday afternoon.

Madison Herring drew a leadoff walk in the top of the first and proceeded to steal her 11th and 12th base of the year to get into scoring position. Two batters later, McCollum connected on a two-run home run to put the Camels ahead 2-0.

Baker didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning on Katie Newton's leadoff single. The senior pitcher faced 23 batters on the afternoon and allowed only two hits on the day. She finished the day with three strikeouts and her first win of the 2017 season.

Mozingo and Amber Schisler both finished the contest going 2-for-3 in the win.

Iona's Marnie Skinner picked up her second loss of the season, as she went the distance and allowed six hits and two earned runs.

Game two: Campbell 3, Furman 5

Furman scored four in the second inning en route to the 5-3 win over Campbell Saturday. With the loss, it is Campbell's second consecutive split at the Furman/USC Upstate Classic.

With two outs in the second inning, the Paladins reached base on three consecutive singles to load the bases. The next batter, Caroline Cash, stepped up and hit a grand slam to give Furman the 4-0 lead.

The Camels notched their first two hits of the contest in the top of the fourth inning. McCollum singled up the middle, which advanced Schisler to second and Mozingo connected on a single to right field for CU's second hit of the inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, McCollum a RBI single to put Campbell on the board. With Herring at second and Schisler at first, the sophomore singled up the middle to score the speedy Herring.

Furman answered with one run in the bottom half on Lindsey Bert's RBI single up the middle to score Courtney Jacobs.

The Camels scored once in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to three, 5-2. Christa Hall recorded a RBI ground out which scored Taesha DuBoise from third.

Campbell added its final run in the seventh as Herring scored from third after Schisler reached on a fielding error. A strikeout ended the seventh as Furman held on for the 5-3 victory.

Baker was tabbed with the loss in four innings pitched. She allowed five runs on five hits.

Lindsey Bert earned her first win of the season in five innings of work. Bert allowed just two runs and struck out three.

Mozingo and McCollum went 2-for-4 in the game, while Schisler, McCollum, and Hall each notched RBIs.

Campbell concludes the weekend against Towson at 11 a.m. Sunday morning.
