Camels drop Sunday matinee to Spiders 16-7

BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- Richmond jumped out to a 6-0 lead en route to a 16-7 win over Campbell Sunday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium. Six Camels found the back of the cage led by two goals from Katie Matz.

Melissa Placek scored a goal and registered an assist while Kayla Reilly and Sarah Paul each scored as well. Carter Koontz and Sami Smit also entered the scoring column with a goal and Tina Ricci assisted on a score. Amanda Chasin had a game-high five ground balls.

Smit put the Camels (3-5) on the board at the 11:05 mark of the first half to break up the Spiders' (4-3) 6-0 start to the contest. Mia Castagnero found the back of the cage for UR two minutes later as the Spiders led 7-1 at the half.

Reilly and Koontz went back-to-back in the in the first three minutes of the second half to draw the Camels within 7-3 of the lead. However, Richmond reeled off four-straight goals to take a commanding 11-3 advantage with 18:02 left to play.

The Camels answered with four of the next six goals, and the score sat at 13-6 with 10:11 remaining in the contest. The Spiders scored three goals in the final nine minutes of action to seal the nine-goal victory.

Kim Egizi and Natalia Chaney led Richmond with four goals each while Marissa Brown assisted on six goals. Sam Giersbach scored three times while Caroline Queally led all players with six draw controls.

Richmond net minder Megan Gianforte earned the win in the cage with six saves while Merredith Bechler took the loss with five stops. Campbell held a narrow 13-12 advantage on the draw but the Spiders outshot the Camels 25-19. CU was also plagued with 16 turnovers.

Campbell will continue its five-game homestand on Friday when ACC foe Virginia Tech travels to Barker-Lane Stadium. The opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
