Camels bounce back with win over Morgan State, 5-2

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- The Fighting Camels earned a win under the lights Tuesday night at the James R. Nisbet Tennis Center as CU defeated the Morgan State Bears, 5-2. After dropping the doubles point to MSU, the Campbell men bounced back with a strong showing in singles play, winning five of six flights to claim the victory. The Camels protected the Creek once again as CU now boasts a 7-0 record at home this spring.

Campbell (13-3, 3-1 BSC) opened the match with a win at No. 2 doubles from Gerard Sola and Jonathan O'Neal over MSU's Ramakrishnan/Sathyanarayanan, 6-3. It was the duo's 12th win of the season, a mark that ranks second in the Big South this spring. MSU answered with back-to-back wins on courts one and three to clinch the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead into singles action.

The Camels would not go down without a fight as they dominated singles play with five wins. Campbell freshman Fernando Clemente got the ball rolling with a quick 6-4, 6-0 win on court four. Louis Monterosso saw action for the first time since Feb. 2, earning his first singles win of the spring on court six with a score of 6-2, 6-2. O'Neal earned a hard-fought win on court five, 6-1, 7-5 to give CU a commanding 3-1 lead.

With the sun setting on the horizon, the lights came on for the first time this season at the Nisbet Tennis Center. The match was clinched at No. 2 singles, where Dustin Werner picked up his third-consecutive win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Campbell junior Lukas Schaefer forced a third tiebreaker set to earn a victory on court one, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4), good for his fourth-straight. Sola suffered just his second loss of the season on court three, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) to end the match.

Up next, the Camels will host a Big South matchup against the Winthrop Eagles on Friday, March 24. That contest is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start at the James R. Nisbet Tennis Center. For the most up-to-date information on Campbell tennis, follow @GoCamelsTennis on Twitter.
