12th-Ranked Hokies top Camels Friday afternoon

BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- Kristine Loscalzo scored six goals to lead No. 12 Virginia Tech to a 19-5 win over Campbell Friday at Barker-Lane Stadium. Melissa Placek led the Camels with three points on two assists and a goal.

The Hokies (11-2) raced out to a commanding 11-0 lead over the first 24 minutes of the contest. Loscalzo registered four goals during the stretch while Emma Harden found the back of the cage twice.

Sarah Paul put the Camels (3-6) on the board at the 4:21 mark of the first half and Placek scored with just five seconds to go before the break to cut the halftime deficit to 11-2.

Katlin Steinbauer registered her first goal of the season with 11:15 left in the contest to break up a 5-0 run by the Hokies and make the score 16-3. VT scored three more times over the next nine minutes and led 19-3 with 2:35 to go in the game.

Tina Ricci found the back of the cage off an assist from April Reinhart with just over a minute left to play. Kayla Reilly capped the scoring with a last-second goal from Placek.

Overall, 10 Hokies finished in the scoring column and Loscalzo registered a game-high seven points with an assist. Zan Beidenharn scored three times while Taylor Caskey added two goals off the bench.

Placek picked up a game-high five draw controls and caused three turnovers for Campbell. Sam Carey added four draws, while the Camels as a unit held a 13-12 advantage from the draw.

VT starter Meagh Graham earned the win in goal with a pair of saves in 14 minutes of action. Kylie Haarhoff made the start in the cage for the Camels and took the loss after allowing the first seven goals. Freshman Alex Salim made her first career appearance and made six saves in 45 minutes of action.

The Camels will open their seven-game Big South slate on Saturday, April 1 when they host defending league champions Winthrop.
