High Point takes series opener over Camels 10-4

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point pounded out 10 runs on 12 hits to top Campbell 10-4 Friday night at Williard Stadium.

HPU moves to 15-14 overall and 4-6 in Big South play, while Campbell falls to 15-14 on the year and 4-2 in conference games. The three game series continues Saturday with a 2 p.m. start. Sunday's finale is set for 1 p.m.

8-of-9 Panthers in the lineup picked up a hit, led by Josh Greene's 2-for-4 effort. HPU scored in each of the game's first five innings to take an 8-0 lead, with Greene's two out solo home run kick starting the Panthers in the first.

Campbell answered with a four-run sixth to cut the HPU lead in half. Jeff Hahs put the Camels on the board with a RBI double, and Cole Hallum followed with a two-run single, later scoring on a wild pitch, cutting the lead to 8-4.

CU threatened again in the eighth, loading the bases on three walks before a strikeout and a fielder's choice ended the inning.

Hunter Lee's two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth extended the Panther lead to 10-4. Lee was 1-for-4 in the win, scoring twice.

Carson Jackson and Blake Schunk also drove in two apiece for HPU.

Andrew Gottfried (2-2) picked up the win, going 5 2/3 with four runs, three earned, on four hits with seven strikeouts and a walk. He retired 11 Camels in a row from the second through the fifth before Campbell's four-run stanza.

Matt Hodges earned the save, his second, working 3 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and four walks.

Allan Winans (2-4) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits with a strikeout and a walk.

Bryce Cota surrendered three runs, two earned, on three hits with four walks in 2 1/3, while Phil Stokes allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and three walks in three innings.

Hahs was 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run for the Camels, while Hallum went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Campbell returns to Jim Perry Stadium on Tuesday, April 12, hosting Duke. The Camels host Radford in a three-game Big South series, April 13-15.
