Camels down NCCU 15-4

DURHAM, N.C. – Eight Camels drove in runs and Campbell defeated North Carolina Central 15-4 on the road at the Durham Athletic Park Wednesday.

The Camels improved to 22-26 on the season, while NCCU dropped to 22-28 overall. Campbell also won its previous matchup with NCCU, 4-2, on April 18.

Eight Camels also scored at least one run in the win. Campbell's 15 runs matched a season high (at Virginia Tech, March 28, W 15-8).

Campbell jumped on the board in the first with a two-run Jimmy Monaghan single.

An inning later, the Camels sent 12 to the plate, scoring eight on four hits with three NCCU errors. Adam Wyse and Bryce Myers both picked up RBI singles in the frame, while Drew Butler capped off the eight-run inning with a two-run double. Kyle Mehl and Michael Van Degna also notched RBI with a walk and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

8-of-9 Camels in the lineup scored in the inning, putting CU up 10-0.

CU's eight runs in the inning were a season-best, and the most since posting eight in a 15-3 win over North Carolina A&T on March 20, 2016.

On the night, Matthew Barefoot went 2-for-6 with three RBI and a run, including a two run double in the eighth.

Butler went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs. Monaghan and Van Degna both added two RBI, while Nicholas Rowland scored three times for the Camels.

Bryce Cota (1-0) picked up the win, allowing three runs on two hits with three walks in his first career start. Alex Yarem tossed two scoreless innings in relief, scattering two hits.

Campbell's bullpen held the Eagles to a run in six innings, allowing seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

Christian Gonnelli (0-6) was charged with the loss, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Carter Williams led NCCU at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run. Corey Joyce drove in three runs, going 1-for-5 with a two-run triple in the third and a RBI fielder's choice in the seventh.

Campbell heads to Winthrop this weekend, May 12-14, for its Big South road finale.
