WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. – After a difficult start, Campbell recovered and played well over the final nine holes Tuesday in the NCAA West Lafayette regional men's golf championship. The Camels were 10-over-par at the turn, but played their final nine holes (the front side) at just two-over on the par-72, 7411-yard Kampen Course.
No.-44 New Mexico overtook UNLV for first place after shooting 6-under-par Tuesday (288-282—570). The 17th-ranked Rebels head into Wednesday's final round just three shots off the pace (287-286—573).
Fifth-ranked Florida (292-287—579), host and 38-ranked Purdue (292-287—579) and No.-20 Auburn (292-287—579) are tied for third place. No.-8 Illinois is sixth (288-296—584).
With the wind blowing out of the southwest up to 20 miles per hour, Campbell (306-300—606) moved up one spot to 11th, three strokes behind Richmond (297-306—603) and three ahead of Cleveland State in the 13-team field.
The top five teams and low individual not on those qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Trent Wallace of Illinois State tops the individual leader board at six-under 138 (68-70), one shot ahead of New Mexico's Andrej Bevins (71-68—139) and Shintaro Ban of UNLV (70-69—139).
Campbell sophomore Jesper Svensson is tied for 38th place at 6-over 150 (75-75). The Big South golfer of the year made three birdies in a five-hole span Tuesday, but bogeyed his 17th and 18th holes (the par-4 eighth and ninth) of the day. Svensson hit his drive on the par-4 third hole more than 380 yards; then knocked his approach shot to about 18 inches to set up a birdie putt.
Senior Craig Hornberger and freshman Brett McLamb turned in Campbell's low scores of the day at two-over 74. Hornberger was four-over after a bogey on the second, but played his last seven holes at 2-under and is tied for 48th at 8-over 152 (78-74). He is tied for seventh in the field in par-5 scoring (-3).
McLamb (79-74—153) made four birdies on the day and finished the front side (his last nine holes) one-over.
Junior Thomas La Morte (76-77—153) is tied with McLamb for 53rd place in the 75-golfer field. La Morte made 8-straight pars and was one-over for his last nine holes. Sophomore Ray Kraivixien (77-78—155) is tied for 63rd. He holed out at 115-yard shot from the par-four 15th for eagle.
"This is a lot of golf course," said Campbell head coach John Crooks. "We did a little better job with our distance control, but we're still missing too many opportunities. Tomorrow's another day."
As a team, the Camels are second in the field in scoring on the par-3 holes (+7) and have made 106 pars overall (tied for 8th).
Campbell will be paired with Richmond and Cleveland State for Wednesday's final round and start again from the 10th tee at 8:25 a.m. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
