SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Campbell softball split its final two contests of the San Diego Tournament at the Torero Softball Complex on Saturday.
The Camels defeated CSU Bakersfield, 7-4, in the opening game, while CU fell to host San Diego, 5-0, to close out the tournament.
Campbell boasts a record of 3-2, while San Diego is 3-1 and CSU Bakersfield holds a record of 0-3. The Toreros and Roadrunners will play two more games to close out the San Diego Tournament.
Game one: Campbell 7, CSU Bakersfield 4
Madison Herring went 4-for-5 from the plate with two runs and one RBI to pace Campbell to a 7-4 victory over CSU Bakersfield in game one of a doubleheader at the Torero Softball Complex on Saturday.
The Camels got on the board quickly with four runs in the opening inning of play. Herring got things started with a single, reached third base off a fielding error and scored off a second error.
Rachel McCollum also reached home off the second throwing error.
Lizabeth McCurry brought home
Bri Bryant off a single down the left field line, while
Haydn Parker extended the lead to 4-0 following a fielder's choice.
Campbell tacked on two more runs in the third inning to take a six run lead. McCurry had a leadoff double and scored her first run of the game off a single by
Caroline Smith. The Wilson, N.C., native came home following a single to center field by
Madison Herring.
CSU Bakersfield got on the board in the third inning, scoring one run to cut the Camels' lead to 6-1. The Roadrunners tacked on two additional runs in the fifth inning, as Cydney Curran and Julea Cavazos scored for CSUB.
Herring tallied her second run of the day in the sixth inning to extend CU's lead back to four runs at 7-3. The junior infielder crossed home plate after a fly out to right field by McCollum.
The Roadrunners attempted a rally in the sixth inning, as Kaylynn Burt knocked a triple down the left field line to bring Halle Neher home. CSUB had one runner on base, but two consecutive fly outs ended the scoring threat.
Megan Richards (3-0) picked up her third consecutive victory for the Camels, only allowing five hits and four runs while striking out four in seven innings in the circle.
Haley Hutchins faced one batter in the seventh inning before Richards re-entered the game.
Summer Evans (0-3) was tabbed with the loss after allowing four runs and four hits in two innings played for the Roadrunners. Daryn Hitzel and Kaycee Olson also pitched for CSUB in the loss.
Game two: San Diego 5, Campbell 0
Halle Kyler (2-0) pitched a complete game shutout to lead San Diego to a 5-0 victory over Campbell on Saturday evening at the Torero Softball Complex. The Camels were limited to three hits in the series finale versus the Toreros.
USD put one run on the board in the opening inning of play, as Sara Silveyra squeezed a single through the left side to bring home Taylor Spence. Silveyra added another run in the third inning, as she blasted a homer over the left field wall.
The Toreros extended its lead to three runs at 3-0 in the fourth inning after a single by Lindsay Clare brought home Lauren Kane.
CU's best scoring chance came in the fifth inning, when
Caroline Smith smacked a single to left field and advanced to second off of a groundout. However, a fly out ended the scoring opportunity for the Camels.
Kailey Hill scored the USD's final two runs of the game in the fifth inning, as she hit a home run to left field to extend the Toreros' lead to 5-0.
Lexy Head (0-1) was charged with the loss after giving up eight hits and five runs in six innings in the circle for the Fighting Camels.
