BUIES CREEK, N.C. – James Madison scored five runs in the final two innings to overcome a four run deficit and defeat Campbell, 8-7, on the final day of the Campbell Invitational on Sunday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
Campbell drops to 5-5 on the season, while James Madison improves to 5-2 on the season. The Dukes also beat Morehead State, 8-0, in the first game of the day.
JMU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the opening inning of play following runs by Morgan Tolle and Kate Gordon. Tolle hit a lead-off double and was brought home by a sacrifice fly by Odicci Alexander. On the next play, Gordon smacked a home run to left field.
The Camels also got on the board in the first inning, scoring one run to halve the Dukes' lead at 2-1.
Madison Herring led off with a double to left center and was brought home via two errors by the James Madison defense.
Campbell took a 5-2 lead over the visitors in the second inning after scoring four runs off of three hits and one error.
Abby Perryman reached first off of a throwing error by JMU pitcher Payton Buresch and scored her second run of the season following a double by
Megan Mozingo.
Rachel McCollum brought home three more runs after hitting a three-run shot to right center field. She scored
Christa Hall and Herring with the long ball, her second of the season.
James Madison tacked on another run in the third inning, as Paige Mitchell scored off of a sacrifice fly by Alexander.
McCollum extended the Camels lead to four runs at 7-3 in the fourth inning with her second homer of the day. The homer also brought home Herring, who got on base via a lead-off walk.
This is the sixth time that McCollum has hit two home runs in a game, as she accomplished the feat once in 2017 and three times in 2016. The last time was against St. Francis (Pa.) on Feb. 10, 2017, in the opening game of the Campbell Invitational.
The Dukes cut Campbell's lead to 7-6 in the sixth inning, cutting the deficit to one run with one inning remaining. Gordon hit a lead-off triple and was brought home by a homer to left field by Sara Jubas. The final run of the inning came via a sacrifice fly by Mitchell.
James Madison re-took the lead in the seventh inning of play at 8-7, the Dukes first lead since the second inning. The visitors loaded the bases following a hit by pitch, fielder's choice and walk, and two runners were brought home via consecutive sacrifice flies. Alexander struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory for JMU.
Alexander (4-1) picked up the win for James Madison, after pitching five innings in relief and allowing one hit, two runs, while fanning out 12 batters. Buresch started the game for the Dukes, conceding five runs in two innings.
Richards (3-2) was tabbed with the loss for the Camels after conceding the lead in the final inning of play.
Lexy Head started the game for Campbell, pitching five innings from the circle and allowing six runs off of five hits.
