Camels drop series finale to Gardner-Webb 12-9

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Kaylee Wacaster went 3-for-4 with one double, one home run, three runs and three RBI to lead Gardner-Webb to a 12-9 victory over Campbell in the series finale on Saturday afternoon at Brinkley Stadium.

With the loss, the Camels fall to 12-13 and 2-1 in the Big South, while the Runnin' Bulldogs improve to 15-12 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

For the second time this season, Campbell hit five home runs in a single game, as the Camels also accomplished the feat against Virginia on Feb. 28. The Orange and Black have hit 28 home runs through the first 25 games of the 2018 season.

CU hit three home runs in the opening inning to jump out to an early 4-0 lead. Rachel McCollum got the long ball party started with a solo shot to left field and Caroline Smith followed with a one-run home run of her own on the next play. Lizabeth McCurry hit a two-run shot to center field, also scoring Bri Bryant, who got on base via an infield single.

Gardner-Webb responded in the bottom of the first, plating three runs to cut Campbell's lead to one run at 4-3. Katie Prebble hit a home run of her own, a two-run shot to right center field that also scored Weslyn Almond. Kaylee Wacaster followed up with a double to get in scoring position and scored off of a Katie Stettler single two plays later.

The Orange and Black fired back in the second inning, scoring three runs to extend the lead to three runs at 7-3. Melissa Tullar reached base via a leadoff walk and was brought home following an error by the Gardner-Webb defense. Madison Herring scored off of a single by Smith and a Megan Mozingo single brought home Smith.

Once again, the Runnin' Bulldogs responded with an offensive flurry of their own, plating four runs in the third to knot it up at 7-7. CU re-took the lead in the fifth inning at 8-7, but GWU scored another four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a three run lead at 11-8.

Gardner-Webb tacked on another run in the sixth to take a four run margin with three outs remaining in the game. Tullar hit her first home run of the 2018 season to cut the lead back to three runs, but a groundout ended the rally for the Fighting Camels.

Sam Harrell (2-1) picked up the win after fanning out five batters across 6.1 innings pitched in relief, while allowing five hits and five runs. Lexi Myers started the game for the Runnin' Bulldogs, pitching 0.2 innings and giving up four hits and four runs.

Haley Hutchins (1-3) was charged with the loss after giving up six hits and six runs across 2.1 innings pitched. Lexy Head, Megan Richards and Hannah McCravy also appeared in the circle for the Camels on Saturday.

The Camels will continue Big South play versus Liberty next weekend in Lynchburg, Va. For the latest information about Campbell softball, make sure to follow @GoCamelsSB on Twitter.
