Camels fall to Liberty 10-3 in series finale

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Alexia Taylor went 2-for-4 with one double, one home run and three RBI to lead Liberty past Campbell, 10-3, in the series finale on Sunday at the Liberty Softball Complex.

The Camels fall to 12-16 overall and 2-4 in the Big South, while the Flames improve to 20-7 with a 3-0 mark in conference play. Campbell currently sits in fifth place in the league standings behind Liberty (3-0), Longwood (3-0), Gardner-Webb (4-2) and Winthrop (2-1).

LU jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning off of home runs by Taylor and Jaclyn Amader. With two runners on base, Taylor smacked the ball to left center field to put three runs on the board. Two plays later, Amader hit a two-run homer to left field, also scoring Sarah Robertson on the play.

Campbell responded in the third inning, as Megan Mozingo hit a double over the head of Liberty's center fielder to bring home Rachel McCollum and Madison Herring. This play cut CU's deficit to three runs at 5-2.

The Flames got the runs back in the bottom of the third, tacking on two runs to extend the lead back to five runs at 7-2. Katilyn McFarland knocked a double to left field to score Robertson and Amader, who got on base via a walk and single, respectively.

In the fifth inning, McCollum hit a solo home run over the wall in right center field to cut the lead to four runs at 7-3. The Seven Springs, N.C., native has now hit 12 homers on the season to bring her career total up to 33, which is the fifth most in school history.

Liberty tacked on another run in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 8-3. The Flames quickly loaded the bases with a single, walk and fielder's choice. Madison Via followed up with a sacrifice foul out to left field to score Robertson. LU threatened to do more damage with the bases loaded with two outs, but a groundout allowed CU to escape the bind.

McFarland hit her second double of the game in the sixth to score two runs and bring the game to the final score of 10-3. The Camels were unable to muster up a rally, as they went down in order in the seventh with a foul out, popup and strikeout.

Julia DiMartino (13-4) picked up her third win of the weekend, pitching four innings in which she conceded two hits and one run while striking out six. Chase Cassady started the game for the Flames, fanning out seven batters across three innings pitched.

Megan Richards (9-7) was charged with the loss after giving up two hits and four runs to the first four batters. Lexy Head and Haley Hutchins both pitched in relief for the Fighting Camels, pitching two and four innings, respectively.

Up next, the Camels will welcome Winthrop to Amanda Littlejohn Stadium for a three-game set on March 24-25. For the latest information on Campbell softball, make sure to follow @GoCamelsSB on Twitter.
