JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Campbell dropped both games on day one of the Jacksonville/UNF Tournament at the Pruitt Softball Complex on Friday. CU opened the day with a 3-0 loss to Virginia Tech, followed by an 11-1 five inning defeat at the hands of Jacksonville.
The Camels fell to 8-10 on the season, while the Hokies improved to 8-7 and the Dolphins moved to 9-7 on the year. Va Tech split on the day with a 2-0 loss to Iowa State earlier in the day, while JU's only game of the day was versus the Fighting Camels.
Game one: Virginia Tech 3, Campbell 0
Jordan Dail (4-3) pitched a one-hitter to lead Virginia Tech to a 3-0 victory over Campbell on Friday at the Pruitt Softball Complex. She faced three batters over the minimum and fanned out 11 across seven innings in the circle.
Megan Mozingo recorded the sole hit of the game for the Camels, a double down the right field line to advance
Melissa Tullar to third base. With two in scoring position,
Caroline Smith flied out to right field to end the scoring opportunity for Campbell.
The Hokies plated one run in the third inning to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Casey Barrett hit a lead-off single to reach base, advanced to third off a groundout by Caroline Schoenewald and scored via a base hit by Olivia Lattin.
Virginia Tech tacked on two more in the fourth to bring the game to the final score of 3-0 off a two-run homer by Caitlyn Nolan. The long ball also scored Kinsey Johnson, who pinch ran for Sierra Walton after she reached base with a lead-off single.
In the sixth,
Madison Herring was in scoring position after reaching first base off of a fielding error by the Virginia Tech defense, stealing second and advancing to third off of the throw. However, a strikeout ended the scoring opportunity for the Camels.
Haley Hutchins (1-2) was charged with the loss after giving up six hits and three runs during four innings pitched. She fanned out four Virginia Tech batters, a career-best for the junior college transfer.
Lexy Head entered the game in relief, pitching three innings and only conceding two hits.
Game two: Jacksonville 11, Campbell 1
Jacksonville plated nine runs in the third inning to lead the Dolphins over the Camels, 11-1, in the final game of the day on Friday evening.
JU took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning of play. After
Megan Richards loaded the bases with three consecutive walks, Kristen Griffith smacked a groundout to second base to bring home Jordan Daniels. Richards also walked the next batter to load the bases again, but a fly out to center field ended the inning.
The Camels fought back in the third inning, tacking on a run to knot it up at 1-1.
Rachel McCollum got things started with a single up the middle on the first pitch. She advanced to second off of a wild pitch and was scored via a double to left center by Smith.
Jacksonville scored nine runs in the bottom of the third to take a 10-1 lead over the Fighting Camels. The Dolphins batted around the order with six base hits, two home runs, one error and two walks. Heather Roberts batted in four of the nine runs, as she hit a grand slam to left field.
JU added on another run in the fourth inning of play to extend the lead to 10 runs at 11-1. Griffith hit a lead-off single and scored following an error fielding a single by Carolyn O'Neal. Campbell forced three consecutive outs to end the inning with two runners in scoring position.
Alyssa Bilodeau (6-1) picked up the win after allowing three hits and one run in three innings pitched, while striking out one. Seana Mora pitched two innings of hitless softball in relief for the Dolphins.
Richards (5-4) was tabbed with the loss after giving up the Dolphins' opening run. Head and
Hannah McCravy both pitched 1.1 innings in relief for the Fighting Camels on Friday.
