Camels fall to Elon 7-3 on Wednesday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Hannah Olson went 2-for-4 from the plate with two runs and one RBI to lead Elon past Campbell, 7-3, on Wednesday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium. The Camels fall to 10-12 on the season, while the Phoenix improve to 12-6 on the year.

Campbell jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Lizabeth McCurry opened up the inning with a lead-off walk and Bri Bryant and Melissa Tullar followed with consecutive singles to load the bases. An error by the Elon defense brought home Bryant after McCurry was called out at home plate on the previous play.

Elon took a 5-1 lead in the sixth inning after batting around the order with two hits. Hannah Olson opened up the scoring with a double to score Morgan Reich. Kara Shutt and Olson scored on the next two consecutive plays off of a fielder's choice and wild pitch, respectively. Erica Serafini scored off of an error by the Campbell defense and Ally Repko stole home to wrap up Elon's scoring in the fifth.

The Phoenix tacked on two additional runs in the seventh to extend the lead to six runs at 7-1. With two runners in scoring position, Serafini smacked a single to right field to bring home Shutt and Olson. Shutt reached base off of a single to left field, while Olson got on base following a fielder's choice to second.

A Caroline Smith double brought home two runs in the seventh to cut the Phoenix lead to four runs at 7-3, but a foul out by Lizabeth McCurry ended the late rally for the Camels.

Kenna Quinn (1-2) picked up her first win of the 2018 season after giving up four hits and three runs during six innings pitched for the Phoenix. Abby Barker pitched the final inning, striking out two of the three batters to secure the win for Elon.

Megan Richards (7-5) was charged with the loss on Wednesday, surrendering three hits and five runs in 5.1 innings pitched. The sophomore righty fanned out seven Phoenix batters and faced one over the minimum through five innings. Haley Hutchins pitched the final 1.2 innings for the Camels, giving up three hits and two runs, while striking out two.

The Camels will open up the 2018 Big South schedule on Friday versus Gardner-Webb, with first pitch of the doubleheader slated for 4 p.m. For more information on Campbell softball, make sure to follow @GoCamelsSB on Twitter.
