RALEIGH – Jessica Moore's two-run homer in the fifth inning proved to be the decisive blow Wednesday and NC State defeated Campbell 6-5 at Dail Softball Stadium.
Haylee Kobziak added a three-run shot in the third for the Wolfpack (21-19), who ended a five-game losing streak.
Megan Mozingo went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and
Caroline Smith hit her eighth home run of the year for Campbell (18-23), which climbed back from an early 3-run deficit, but could not complete the comeback.
Kama Woodall (7-7) pitched 3.2 innings of relief to earn the win. She allowed two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out a pair.
Megan Richards (12-9) suffered the loss after surrendering two runs on two hits with two walks in three innings of relief. Camel starter
Haley Hutchins gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in three frames.
The Camels struck first on a double steal in the second. When Mozingo broke for second, Hutchins scored at home.
Kobziak's 3-run shot was the big blow in a 4-run third gave the Wolfpack the lead.
Campbell scored twice without the benefit of a hit in the fourth. Three walks, a wild pitch and fielder's choice trimmed the deficit to 4-3. One inning later,
Katie Manring singled and scored on Monzingo's RBI double to tie the score.
However in the bottom of the frame, Kobziak led off with a walk and eventually scored on Moore's first homer of the year.
Smith's solo shot to lead off the seventh pulled Campbell back within one. Lizbeth McCurry then walked, but Woodall finished with a strikeout, fly out and ground out to end the threat.
Campbell returns to action with a weekend series at Big South rival Charleston Southern. The teams will meet for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader Saturday followed by a single game Sunday (1:00 p.m.).
