CHARLESTON, S.C. - Campbell tallied 15 runs over two games as Campbell swept the double header and completed the three-game sweep over Charleston Southern Saturday at the CSU Softball Field.
Game one- Campbell 8, Charleston Southern 3
Megan Richards recorded seven strikeouts as she went the distance in Campbell's 8-3 win over Charleston Southern in game one of the double header. The sophomore pitched six scoreless innings before giving up three runs in the final frame.
Caroline Smith went 2 for 3 on the day and scored two runs for the Camels (20-23, 8-9 BSC).
Jade Gandara (2 for 4, 2 RBI) drove in the first two runs of the seventh for the Bucs (25-23, 6-8 BSC).
Campbell struck first on a
Cassie Wancheck (1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) double to right field that drove in
Katie Manring to give the Camels the early 1-0 edge.
In the top of the third,
Lizabeth McCurry (1 for 4, 2 RBI) added two insurance runs in the third on a double that shot over the center fielder's head to drive in
Caroline Smith and
Bri Bryant to push the Campbell lead to 3-0.
Campbell pushed two unearned runs across in the fourth after
Lizabeth McCurry reached on a fielding error that allowed
Rachel McCollum and
Bri Bryant to score.
Cassie Wancheck and
Megan Mozingo came across to score in the seventh before the Bucs scored the final three runs of the matchup to close out the game.
Nicole Ayala (1-2) picked up the loss after giving up six runs on six hits with just two strikeouts over four innings of work. Ayala walked six batters but gave up just three earned runs to bring her ERA to 3.12 on the season.
Game two- Campbell 7, Charleston Southern 4
Tied 4-4, in the top of the seventh,
Megan Mozingo rocketed a three-run shot over the center field wall to put the Camels up for good, 7-4.
The Camels trailed 4-3 heading into the seventh before
Abby Perryman (1 for 3, 1 R) doubled to right center to lead off the inning. After a single to right field by
Rachel McCollum (2 for 4, 1R) and advancing Perryman to third,
Caroline Smith (3 for 3, 3 RBI) soared a sac fly to center field to drive in the tying run. Lizzie McCurry followed with a double to set up the three shot from Mozingo to cap off the four run, five hit inning.
Lexy Head (1-0) picked up the win allowing no runs over her final four frames. The freshman recorded three strikeouts and walked just one batter in relief.
Sarah Brown (2 for 2, 1R, 1 RBI) sent a solo shot over the left field wall to give the Bucs a 4-1 lead before Campbell stormed back for six unanswered runs to close out the game.
Nicole Ayala (1-3) registered her second loss of the day by allowing five earned runs over six and a third innings of work. She recorded three strikeouts and walked none but the Camels tallied 11 hits against the righty before running her off in the seventh inning.
Campbell closes out a five-game road stretch Wednesday as the Camels travel to Columbia, S.C. to take on South Carolina for a midweek matchup. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
