BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell split with Big South foe Radford on Saturday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium. The Highlanders won the series opener, 8-0, while the Camels emerged victorious in game two, 7-6.
Campbell now holds an overall record of 18-21 and a 6-8 mark in Big South play, while Radford is 19-13 with a 4-4 conference record. The Camels sit in sixth place in the league standings, while Radford is fourth.
With projected inclement weather in Harnett County on Saturday, the rubber match has been moved to Sunday at 1 p.m. in Buies Creek.
Game one: Radford 8, Campbell 0 (5 innings)
Hannah Medlam went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and one RBI to lead Radford to an 8-0 five inning victory over Campbell in the series opener at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
The Highlanders tallied a season-high of 13 hits and held the Camels to six hits and zero runs in the victory. Four Radford players had multi-hit days, including Talia Douglas, Marissa Gagliano, Medlam and Sofia Tapia.
Campbell threatened in the first inning, as the Camels had the bases loaded with one out, but consecutive outs ended the scoring opportunity for CU.
Bri Bryant,
Rachel McCollum and
Lizabeth McCurry all reached base off of back-to-back-to-back singles.
Radford plated five runs in the second inning to take a commanding 5-0 lead. After Medlam reached base via a lead-off single, Hunter Mundy smacked a home run over the left field wall to bring home two runs. Three plays later, Gagliano knocked a triple to left field to score Brianna Mills, who reached base on a walk.
Tapia followed with a single through the right side to bring home Gagliano. Douglas then roped a double to right center field to score Tapia for the fifth run of the inning.
RU tacked on an additional run in the third, as a single by Mills brought home Medlam, who reached base via a lead-off single.
In the fourth, Radford scored four additional runs to bring the game to the final score of 8-0. Maggie Rowe smacked a double to right center field to score Tapia, who singled to reach base. A single by Medlam scored Sienna Williams, who pinch ran for Rowe.
Abby Morrow (13-7) picked up the win with her fifth shutout of the season, which is ranked second in the Big South. Morrow struck out three batters across three innings of work. Kayla Huffman pitched the final two innings in relief, striking out four.
Megan Richards (12-8) was charged with the loss, allowing 13 hits and eight runs in four innings pitched.
Lexy Head pitched the final inning of the game in relief.
Game two: Campbell 7, Radford 6 (8 innings)
Melissa Tullar roped a single through the left side to score McCollum and give Campbell the 7-6 walk-off victory over Radford in game two of Friday's doubleheader.
CU plated two runs in the opening inning to take an early 2-0 lead. On the first pitch she saw, Bryant smacked a solo homer over the wall in right center field, her first career long ball. McCollum followed up with a double to left center and was scored via a
Katie Manring double three plays later.
Radford battled back in the second, scoring one run to cut Campbell's lead to one run at 2-1. Marissa Yow knocked a double to left field and was scored via a Lauren Maddrey double two plays later.
In the second inning, McCollum hit a three-run home run to extend the Fighting Camels' lead to 5-2. The Seven Springs, N.C., native's 14th long ball of the season also scored Bryant and
Christa Hall.
Bryant recorded her second home run of the day in the fourth, a solo shot over the left field wall to extend Campbell's lead to 6-0.
The Highlanders responded in the fifth, tacking on three runs to cut the Camels lead to two runs at 6-4. Radford tied it up at 6-6 in the sixth off of a two RBI single by Tapia.
Both squads were unable to score a run in the seventh, forcing extra innings at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
With two outs gone, McCollum and
Caroline Smith hit consecutive singles to put two on base.
Lizabeth McCurry drew a walk on the next play to load the bases with
Melissa Tullar due up to bat. The senior from Alta Loma, Calif., hit a single through the left side to score McCollum and give CU the walk-off victory.
Haley Hutchins (4-6) picked up the win for the Camels, pitching eight innings in which she allowed 10 hits and four runs, while striking out four. Richards also appeared in the circle for Campbell.
Morrow (13-8) was tabbed with the loss, giving up eight hits and six runs across five innings pitched. Huffman and Jessie Marvin also pitched for the Highlanders in relief.
