Lancers edge Camels 6-5 in Big South tourney

RADFORD, VA. – Despite two home runs from Lizabeth McCurry, No. 2 Longwood edged 4th-seeded Campbell 6-5 Friday at Radford Softball Stadium, eliminating the Camels from the Big South Championships.

Longwood improves to 38-15 on the year, while Campbell's season ends at 29-27. The Camels fought back after dropping their opener 11-5 to Gardner-Webb to win two elimination games by run-rule fashion, downing Winthrop 12-2 and GWU 12-4 before Friday's loss.

The Camels homered three more times in Friday's contest, bringing their four game Big South Championships total to nine.

Abby Perryman put Campbell on the board with CU's first long ball of the day, a two-run blast, giving the Camels a 2-0 lead in the second.

Longwood snagged its first lead of the day in the bottom of the third, scoring three after a one out error, punctuated by Jordan Clark's two-run inside-the-park home run, before McCurry's first homer of the day, a solo shot, answered and tied the game at 3-3.

The Lancers, however, put up another three-run frame in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead. A one out walk, followed by a single, set up Kelsey Sweeney's two-run single, and Leah Powell followed with a RBI double.

McCurry's second homer of the game, and third of the tournament, came in the sixth to bring the Camels within a run at 6-5, but Campbell went in order in the seventh to end the rally.

Clark went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs to lead the Lancers at the plate. Karleigh Donovan also went 2-for-4, adding a RBI and a run.

McCurry was 2-for-3 for the Camels with three RBI and two runs scored, while Perryman went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Rachel McCollum went 1-for-2 with a double, while Katie Manring and Mady Balke added runs.

Sydney Backstrom (13-5) picked up the win in relief, working four innings with three runs on two hits, two strikeouts and a walk. Longwood starter Sydney Gay pitched three innings, allowing two runs on two hits with three punchouts and a walk.

Megan Richards (17-13) took the loss, allowing six runs, three earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts and four walks in 4 1/3 innings. Haley Hutchins tossed the final 1 2/3 scoreless, allowing two hits.

Longwood will take on the loser of top seed Liberty vs. No. 3 Radford in an elimination game today at 3 p.m.
