Baseball standout went on to distinguished educational and broadcast career

The name Koonce has been synonymous with Campbell Baseball since the 1960 season.
 
The Koonce brothers – Cal, then Charles – helped close Campbell's junior college era and usher in the Fighting Camels' transition to senior college status.
 
Both of the Koonce brothers are enshrined in the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame.
 
Cal went on to pitch in the big leagues, then returned to his alma mater in the 1980s as head baseball coach.
 
Charles Koonce batted over .400 twice in his collegiate career then went on to a career as an educational leader in the Fayetteville area.
 
In addition, Charles co-founded Mid-South Sports, Inc., a sports promotion group that has aired high school and college football games for decades.
 
In 2016 Charles was presented with the Order of the Longleaf Pine, the highest honor awarded to civilians in North Carolina
